iPhone doesn't turn on or restore after an unsuccessful jailbreak and restore

I've got an iphone 3gs. It's locked to one carrier, then jailbroken, then unlocked, then I restored it (stupid stupid me), and then tried to jail break (with redsn0w) it again with redsn0w but cydia didn't install properly. Tried to restore it again but I couldn't because the baseband was upgraded in the jailbreak (from what I've read so far, I assume it's that).
So I gave up and brought it to a cell phone repair shop... Got it back and now it doesn't turn on, period.
I tried restoring it with iTunes and get an error 28.
Before taking it to the store it had 4.2.1 on it. I have no idea what it is on it now and don't know what to do. I can't afford to buy a new phone right now... Please help? Thanks in advance.

To get it to go into restore mode, make sure the phone is completely turned off. Then hold down only the home button for 5 seconds, then plug the phone into your computer with the apple usb cord, while you do this continue to hold down the home button for another 8 seconds or so and only let go of the home button once you see the restore image on the phone. Once the restore image is visible on the phone's screen, let go of the home button and iTunes should prompt you that your phone is in restore mode and that you need to restore it.

Good Luck, and if that still doesn't work, then your home button is broken and needs to be physically replaced. I know this because mine broke and wouldn't go into restore mode either. Same goes for your power button, so physically look at both buttons (power & home) before replacing them to confirm that they are in fact busted, it's good to do that and not just throw money away for nothing.

hard reset is the last option. If it wont work, have it checked by the qualified techs, they have their way to short the circuit of the board if needed..

I think the phone might be stuck in recovery mode (is that the same as restore?). I've tried what you said anyway, but I only get a white screen on my phone. No restore screen or anything else.

I tried the hard reset. My screen stays blank.

Plug it in the a/c outlet for several hours and try again while it's plugged in. Sometimes, there could be a weird power drain.

Actually got it fixed. I followed these steps:

Problem solved. Took the iPhone apart. Disconnected the battery for a few mins. Put it back together again. Plugged it in, started iTunes and proceeded to restoring using original firmware 4.2.1. Got an error 1015 as expected and I couldnt have been happier to see that error. Phone went straight into recovery mode after that. From there, used redsnow 0.9.6b5 to enter pwned Dfu mode, then went back to iTunes to install custom firmware 4.2.1. After it installed, phone got stuck on the apple logo screen after restarting. This was expected and I just used redsnow to boot tethered and installed cydia after and proceeded to jailbreaking. Everytime the phone restarted, I just had to boot tethered.

    Original post is on modmyi.com.

My phone is back up and running, and it's jailbroken too.
    However...
Parts of the screen aren't responsive. I think it may be because I didn't get ribbon 3 of the LCD back in all the way. I'm going to crack it open again and see if I can fix that. Hopefully that'll fix my screen issue and I can type in my network password and get through to Cydia. Then I can unlock it.

    Thanks to everyone that contributed!

For this you need to hold the device in your hand and find a rectangular button on the top of the device. This button is called the Sleep/Wake button.
So in order to turn on the phone you need to hold this Sleep/Wake button for few seconds until the Apple logo appears on your screen.
There is no need to panic if that logo remains on the screen for a moment, this is normal. Eventually you’re going to get the “slide to unlock” screen.
Go ahead and slide that bar and you’re good to go!
