Going preapid with wind mobile but still there's a credit check

Last month I activated the Holiday Miracle plan with Wind Mobile. I told the rep that I want PREPAID because I DON'T want an inquiry on my credit file. She puts me on PREPAID. However, as I was checking my credit report today (Jan 31, 2011) I noticed that there was an equiry from: Globalive Wireless.

I thought that if you go PREPAID, there's no credit checks? has anyone have the same issues?

How is this possible? Did you give WIND your SIN when you signed up? I thought a SIN is needed to do a credit check.

It isn't. Wind performs the credit check with a drivers license and a credit card. </not guessing>

It is possible that their system performs the credit check for both prepaid and postpaid accounts when they are created, but does not deny you an account if you fail it on prepaid. </guessing>

When I signed up for pay-before, I never had to show ID or a credit card. Is this Standard Operating Procedure now?

There is no credit check required for pay-before accounts. This was a mistake on the employee's part. Also, this credit check was illegally done and you did not provide permission for them to do this. Also, it did hurt your credit score slightly.

I also think this is another Wind Rep mistake. All my family members went with prepaid and none of them had their credit checked.

Most credit checks for this type of service do not affect your score. It's only when they do a full check (I've only ever had one done by a bank (and by that I mean some institution lending a large sum of money)) that the score can be affected.

i agree that it was an illegal credit check; because i told the sales rep that i want to go PREPAID because I don't want a credit check, but again, they still did a credit check. I will call them today and see what they can do for me (hopefully, they can remove the inqury from my credit file).

the credit check that they perform was a hard inquiry. i don't mind if they did a soft inquiry (to verify my ID) but doing a hard credit check when i told them NO!.. that's just pushing it.
