Well, I went to two corporate stores today. It was comical, because both stores had signs outside that read, "Line begins here." Well, there were no lines. Once inside the store, there were only 2 customers at the first store and 3 at the second store. And TONS of sales associates! I was chuckling inside. At both stores I said I wanted to get the iPhone on my eligible line and at both stores was told I had to "upgrade" to a Verizon plan. I asked if I'd need to "upgrade" to a Vzw plan if I bought a Droid X or HTC Incredible. They said "no." I then asked why I need to "upgrade" to a Vzw plan for the Iphone bought not a Droid. The first store said the Iphone would not operate properly on the Alltel plan. (We all know that is BS but I didn't say that) I then asked if they could confirm this with a manager. He did and I got the same answer. The second store was the same thing only when I asked why do I need to change to a Vzw plan the rep simply stated he did not know and that was just the policy. So, I said thanks but no thanks. They tried to sell me a Vortex. I politely said no and left with my good ole VX8300 in pocket. Oh well. This is a money grab, plain and simple. I know they have to pay Apple dearly, but this is a bit much imho.
DJJIM I feel for you as I went through the same BS trying to get a droid X. I'll tell you something else and that's that a droid blows the I phone away. You can tether easily with a Droid, do more than an I phone. My son has a CIS degree and he researched the two phones before getting the Droid. He told me the Android system is much better and more open than Apples. If those stores told you you could get a droid X on your old Alltel plan why don't you go with the best system out there?(My opinion only). I would never drop my Alltel plan in any case. I would also call and keep calling until you get an operator that is familiar with the Alltel plans and ask about the I phone The operator I got was from Texas. Good luck...
Sounds like bs too me. I'm not calling you a liar, but there is no provisioning needed. My whole family have Verizon phones with an Alltel plan and they operate fine. I think verizon is just making excuses to get people off the Alltel plans. The strong desire for the iPhone will do just the trick for them. As far as FaceTime, that runs through wifi only and has nothing to do with the network. To the person looking for an Alltel plan and an iPhone, forget it. Not going to happen. Alltel plans on through verizon are grandfathered only.
Hey I dont care if people keep alltel plans, even better LOl Thats just what we were told.
The droid x is a different beast all together.. please do not insult an android device by comparing it to the iphone :P
If it works thats awesome, more power to you and do it! Alltel plans are WAY cheaper and better. I personally still have the family choice 1000 with two lines and verizon ... theres no way they can match that plan.
As stated before, it looks like FaceTime is a no go on legacy alltel plans. Something about the prl for those on alltel plans isn't compatible with the extended roaming network requirements or some bs. Still not sure how the plan you're on should impact a wifi only feature.

It doesnt. It's a lie they made up. Sadly, most people will buy it.

Just got my first bill after getting the Droid X on Alltels National freedom 900 min. with unlimited data on one only of the two lines. $98. The other phone is just used as a phone no data or anything else. Plus 10 my family numbers. I figured it saved me about $18 a month compared to Alltels 1400 min. with the 10 free numbers that I must have.
Can confirm that you can get an iPhone on an existing Alltel (grandfathered) plan without changing over to a Verizon plan. I actually ended up paying $10 less a month because they took the tethering provision I was paying for off my plan, as it wouldn't work with an iPhone. (Apparently, only the Verizon tethering package will work with the iPhone for tethering. I'll probably just jailbreak.)

How were you able to do this? I have a grandfathered alltel plan with an available upgrade, and I want to go from the droid x to the iphone. I was told that when going through the upgrade process it'd prompt to switch to a verizon plan, which I do not want to do.
Any advice or tips on how you were able to do this process and keep your original alltel plan would be greatly appreciated...thanks!
