How long does number porting take?

Tried to find answer on the forum but came up blank.

I'm switching from ATT to Verizon. I understand that I can start the port process once I have the new phone (although if the number that comes with it seems okay I may not bother with the port.) About how long does the porting process take? Anyone had recent experience with this?

    Thanks! Robin

I've had a port done fully in just 5 minutes before. Average is 4 hours. They will tell you up to 48 hours.

Landlines can take the longest of up to 21 days.

For me one line was ported before I walked out of the store and 3 others I did over the phone and they too were ported before I was done with the call. This was Sprint to Verizon.

When I ported my daughter she got a confirmation text before I was done with the phone call even though the guy was in the process telling me 24-48 hours

When my family went from Alltel to Verizon in 2006 we had the numbers ported and active before we left the vzw store.

I ported two numbers today. I called the port center to start the port. Once I hung up the phone, both numbers where done porting within 10 mins of hanging up.

We ported a couple at work yesterday. 40 minutes on hold, then 5 minutes with a CSR. The numbers completed switching before we hung up. I think they were sort of busy.

Wow. Thanks everyone for the feedback - hopefully that info will help others too! Ironically I am probably sticking with the new number, at least for a while, since I got the end of contract date wrong with AT&T! ("Ohh, that deal for the iPhone was an early upgrade offer....")

Still good to know about the porting time!
