I read on Droid-Life that the Droid 3 will not be in the spring/summer lineup. Is there any truth to that rumor? I sure hope not!

I am not really a total noobie on HoFo. Just can't remember my old user info from LG V9800 era posts...
So, I'm starting afresh -
Simple question: Is the Droid 3 to be a global GSM phone with a sim card like the TB?
Or is it just global but still CDMA like the 'old' ("while supplies last") Droid 2?
Yes, all indications point to the Droid 3 being a global phone.
On Verizon, if they say it's a global phone, that means it has a GSM radio and a SIM card slot in addition to the CDMA radio. There is not a global phone on Verizon without a GSM radio. If there were, it wouldn't be a global phone.
The "old" Droid 2 was never a global phone. A few months after it was released, it was discontinued and replaced by the Droid 2 Global, which is a global phone with a GSM radio and SIM card slot. That's the phone that you can buy now from Verizon that is listed as being "while supplies last" in that online catalog (which to me indicates it will be replaced soon...probably by the Droid 3), and it is most definitely global with a GSM radio/SIM card slot.
I knew the history of the Droid 2. Just was making a joke about it being obsoleted less than a year after release. Hence the quotes around "old". Should have added a "", I guess.
But thank you for the clarification. It seems I did understand you correctly the first time. What I had misunderstood was being told that the TB was vzw's first ever GSM phone.

I for one am terribly torn between the Droid 3 and (forgoing a keyboard) Targa/Bionic. The sticking points are the mandated 2 year contract which I never had to deal with before & the lure of LTE which the Droid 3 will not have. May I suggest to those who face the same "to LTE or not LTE"....read another thread here called Bionic pre-release thread. It has a great deal of info on where LTE is today...what's happened to the Bionic and is helping me make up my mind...Here's a quote from Bionic pre-release written by Winston25 on March 25...
"Honestly, there won't be a great LTE handset this year (I am speaking from a design/chipset stand point). This is all first gen stuff. The really good LTE stuff will show up about mid next year. "
There is more to his statement but this gets to the crux of the dilemma. Perhaps a damn good keyboard dual core processor 3G phone might be the best choice at this time. I've read about the TB and Charge and they both seem to have major issues and for better or worse I'm a Moto Man (God help me!) Mid next year is more than a year away. I want a keyboard phone that is faster and more capable with lots more memory than my original Droid which has at most another 3-4 months life to it. Perhaps the answer might lie in the Bionic pre-release thread....and the final specs of the Droid 3.

It is unfortunate to hear the Droid 3 will almost certainly lack LTE.
That keeps it from being my perfect phone and to immediately replace my Thunderbolt with.
Does anyone think that VZW would soon afterwards launch an LTE version of the phone, like they launched a global version of the Droid 2 months later?
I am very anxious for a slider LTE phone!![]()
The lack of LTE doesn't bother me especially since I sold my ThunderBolt due to battery life issues and how hard it is to use outdoors. I am looking to get either the DX2 or the D3, and would not mind getting the D3 for the keyboard but I'm not willing to wait months and months for Moto to get this out the door.
Since BestBuy shows it in their system and the Verizon Spring/Summer promo flyer has "whiles supplies last" on the D2G its pretty clear they are moving stock out as quickly as possible for its replacement.
Battery life is what matters most on a smartphone 3G is also acceptable for web, email, etc., for me anyways (for now).
I only wish that there was more news about a release date. I just hope its by September.

Having the D3 left out of the catalog sounds ominous to me. Moto isn't facing the LTE/dual core issues here, so it doesn't seem like it should be that hard to get it quickly into production. But -- for whatever reason -- it ain't happenin'! It feels to me that they're stringing us along. I'll wait to see if any thing firms up after these upcoming Thursday releases. If not...
Anyway, I don't want to commit 2 years to a fill-in phone. I want 4G and a KB. Cake and a full belly!
I'm leaning towards getting a cheap rooted non-global "old" D2 off Craig's list or wherever, unblur it & pop in some gingerbread & FF4. Then wait for the real deal. That way I can lock in unlimited data and still stay off contract. I haven't been on vzw contract since my LG V9800 expired: No good true qwerty KB smart-phones worth re-upping for. Look at your PC -- real qwerty doesn't need a function key for numbers. Here's a quote from Bionic pre-release written by Winston25 on March 25...

Just because it's not in the catalog doesn't mean it's not coming. A company typically doesn't start advertising a product that it hasn't announced yet. The Droid X2 isn't in the catalog either, and we know that's definitely coming sooner rather than later. And the fact that the Droid 2 Global says "while supplies last" clearly indicates that a replacement is on the way.
Yes, the X2 and the D3 are, probably, coming this year. But if they're not in the current catalog that might mean that they're getting pushed back, even before being scheduled to begin with. Look what just happened to the Charge.
I need something better than this Treo -- Now! -- or pretty soon, anyway. July 4 w/e for the D3 would not be so terrible. Labor Day is pushing it. And, atm, there's no assurance that the D3 won't be wearing a Halloween mask when it finally comes knocking. Better get a good current phone -- quickly, cheaply, and without re-upping. For me, the D2 makes sense. Without 4G, the D3 won't be such a huge step up from the D2 anyway. Then I'll just wait til the 'Droid 3 LTE' (or whatever they call it) shows up. Maybe, by then, 12mp cameras with 1080p video capture will be the current standard...
Of course, if a release date firms up solidly for the D3 in the next week or two, that would be different. I will be -- pleasantly -- very surprised if that happens.

You should certainly do whatever you think best for you, but the D3 is a big step up from D2. The D2 is not a big step up from the D1. But from the D2 to D3 you are going from single core OMAP 3 to dual core OMAP 4, big difference. Not to mention DDR2 RAM, screen size/quality and 5 row qwerty.
