    When a Fido 3-year contract ends ... ...

    .
Today I received an e-mail from Fido noting that my 3-year contact is about to end. They're offering me a few Fido dollars to renew but nothing else.

    They finish with:

"Should you decide not to renew your Fido Agreement, you'll retain your current plan on a month-to-month basis."

I am currently happy with my plan: unlimited Nth America calls, unlimited text in Nth America to cell phones, 6GB data, and a $10 credit for CallerID/VoiceMail. Of course paying less would always be an improvement.

I do not need nor want a new phone at the moment so for the time being the Fido dollars are of no immediate use.

    Question:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of renewing a multi-year contract as apposed to "retaining my current plan on a month-to-month basis"?

It would seem that going month-to-month would allow flexibility, but does it also mean that Fido can up the rates or reduce what I have without notice?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Credits can be more difficult to retain if you don't renew, but if you only have a $10 credit they would be foolish to risk losing your monthly revenue over the sake of $10. Also, offering to renew would put you in a position to negotiate a better retentions plan, while going month to month really wouldn't. Your currently plan might be tough to get any further credits on anyway. If you aren't interested in lower monthly fee or if they won't go any lower, I don't see any benefit (except for case the won't renew your current credit without a contract renewal). If a renewal is required to keep the credit, you could always consider a 1 year renewal.

Fido doesn't offer one year renewals.

Also, credits aren't permitted on the unlimited plans anymore.
