I've had the Optimus V since this weekend, and I think this is my biggest gripe so far. Sending and receiving MMS from e-mail addresses is no better either. It's hit and miss. Sometimes I get duplicate messages, sometimes none at all. Trying to respond to an e-mail sometimes leads to an empty message.
My other gripe is the loss of network. I have to put the phone on airplaine mode and then back to reset it. Very anoying.

I've had my Optimus V for about three months now. MMS worked fine at the start and then two months ago a couple of people sent me pics. Wouldn't work but it isn't the end of the world. I contacted VM and tried the pulling the battery fix. No joy. Then I got onto a tech that told me to reactivate the phone. Well it worked. Yay!
Yesterday a couple of friends tried to send pics and nothing. The usual expired message came up. I had written down the reactivate instructions but with all good intentions they were lost somewhere. Called VM and got the usual pull battery answer. Nope didn't work again. Called again and got a tech that gave me the instructions to reactivate. Did so last night and still no joy this morning. Did a little research on the net and downloaded Handcent. Had someone send me a pic and it came straight through. Tried to download it using stock messaging and still get the expired message.
Will this work from now on using Handcent? Who knows. I still have to play with Handcent settings because I was comfortable with the stock messaging setup.
As far as MMS goes I believe that pics retrieved using Handcent come through their servers and not VM. That may be why the pics get through using the different messaging service. Others far more in the know may be able to shed more light on this.
I got tired of surfing the net to find any help and joined this forum in the hope that my experience would at least help some people who are having the same problem.

Anyone have this issue? Anyway to fix faster than VM?

The rest of the phone seems to work fine...I just can't receive MMS (text SSM works fine also)
I found a fix! you must disable wi-fi and enable 3g and youre good

I guess I might need to call VM. I can't send a pic via txt, guess that's a MMS. I tried via stock & handcent. I have rebooted, pulled batt, etc. WiFi on or off. It's still stoc, not rooted.
Any other suggestions? Never had a problem on my RT.

I seem to have better luck with MMS on my OV, which worked exactly like my RT. For me, mms usually works fine, except sometimes when an AT&T iphone sends me a picture message, the phone doesn't show the picture, instead, i click a download button, which then retrieves the picture. my RT wouldn't accept mms from the AT&T iphone.

Not sure if this is clear, but MMS only works over the air on 3G, so that is why they are telling you to try it with WIFI off. You have to have a good 3G connection to use it. In addition, I think that VM has a size limitation that is smaller than the size that the phone will actually let you send, so that does not help. Start with a super small picture to test and work up.

I figured it had to go over the data network; but some 'fixes' were to have wifi off, so I thought I'd mention it. The last 2 I tried to send were 650k and 150k in size, to large?

650 K is definitely too large, and I'm not sure about 150K. Set to the smallest possible and then work up. The phone isn't smart enough to know what the limitations are going to be on the carrier. Remember, MMS is meant to be received on a cell phone over the air, and it was designed years ago, so the pictures are supposed to be small and VM is cheap and may have more limitations. If you want to send a bigger picture, just attach it to an email and send it that way, no practical limitation then other than how long you want to wait for it to send. All the carriers have some MMS size limitations. Could be something else, but send a really small one first and see if that works.

Thanks, guess that's why the RT always said 'converting' when I was sending never paid attention to what size it changed to.

Shrunk it to <17Kb, still 'sending...' 15min later

Yeah, the phone tries to convert it, but as I recall the default is still too big for VM. However 17K should be OK, but the fact that it is stuck on "sending" either means that you don't have a good enough connection or yeah, something is wrong in your area, or with your account. I can't send MMS from my house for example because my connection is 1 bar.

OK, since I have the OV also, I thought that I better test it. I took a 3Mp picture, which was about 500K, and it did allow me to attach that and send it as an MMS, (clicked on the shot in upper right in the camera app and chose share) although it took a long time to send of course. I sent it to myself as a test (other carriers might have other limitations with just complicates things, so start by sending it to yourself). It took a couple minutes, then I received it back as an MMS. Then I saved the received shot out and looked at the size with Astro file manager (it goes in your downloads folder on the SD card) and it was 209K, so it looks like the limiting size might be about 200K on VM. If you can't send shots that are smaller, there might be something with your account or with MMS in your area; VM is notorious for local problems that just go away. It does seem like the limiting size used to be smaller, maybe they fixed that. I'd call them and complain though. I also recall that it takes them a few days to set up your MMS if it is a new account, but maybe that has changed if they have dropped that vmpics service thing now.
