    APN - MMS only

    Hi,

I just want to know if there's a way to configure APN to only allow MMS and block all other data. I have unlimited MMS but no data plan (no data included but I can use data but I do not want). With many provider, there's a APN for MMS ans an other one for internet but Telus seems to use the same for all data exchange.

I tried to create a new one (Android phone) but if the APN type is "mms" I can't select it, there's no toggle box. If the APN type is anything else (" mms" with a space, or any other word) I can select it.

    Sorry for my english

    Thank you.

je vais te la faire en francais sa va etre plus simple if any one want in english i can traduce too ! ...
Donc les setting les voila !
    MMS APN: consumer.telus.com
    MMS Proxy: 74.49.0.18:80

Set type of apn to mms and you are set. Don't worry you can't select the apn, you don't have to. Android will use it for mms sending/receiving only.

Sorry if your question has been answered in the posts above, my french is a bit rusty...

One of the default APN already has mms in APN type ("default, mms, supl") and I can't edit/delete it.

So from what I understand, I will have to create a new APN and setting the APN type to "mms". Let's say Android will use this APN to send/receive MMS, if I can't select the APN, the "data" will still use the default APN, meaning apps will be able to acces the internet and my bill will explode.

I really hope I can select an APN to force Android to use the one I want, since I can't delete the default one with internet/network access.

    callback79,

    Greetings.

I am wondering what specific Android powered device you are using and which provider "locked" APN it has got i.e. the one that you cannot edit / delete.

BTW, the other TELUS MMS APN I know of...

    APN: sp.telus.com
    MMSC: http://aliasredirect.net/proxy/mmsc
    MMS Proxy: 74.49.0.18
    MMS Port: 80
    MCC: 302
    MNC: 220
    APN type: mms

My phone is a Lg Optimus One (P500) from Telus

The APN that are locked are the 2 default APN from Telus which you can restore anytime (sp.telus.com and isp.telus.com).

Since I can't delete these 2 APN OR I can't select a new APN of type "mms" as you mentionned, I don't see how I can use MMS only and denied apps to acces the internet...

Yes, this will pose a problem. My Telus device is (used to be) Motorola Milestone. The APN settings aren't locked on it and you can modify them.
I'll throw in an idea how to 'overcome' this problem: get from market APN backup & restore app. Create backup of your existing APN's using it. The result is a XML file (essentially a text file) stored on your SD card. Open the file on your computer and edit the settings for that access point (sp.telus.com one) - change type to 'mms' only. Save the file and put it back on the SD card. Then fire up the APN Backup&Restore again and do 'restore APN' - if all is good, the locked APN should 'lose' its checkbox and become MMS only.
The app is free so you lose nothing trying. It doesn't need root or anything (if you have root on the phone, matter is easy to resolve anyways ...)

    oxyg3n,

It does NOT happen to me One of my lines does not any data service subscribed at all, just unlimited SMS and MMS with a dumb phone. I believe the APN that would incur data usage is isp.telus.com . Nevertheless, it is good to know another MMS APN you have mentioned.

If i use consumer ... with proxy ... no data charge ( consumer apn is only billed by the proxy ... FPH on telusmobility my account ... ) you can't established direct connection without proxy ! )
if i use sp or bb apn with proxy ... data charge ... is not the proxy who charge but the apn with traffic ... ( RIM ... on telus )
and isp or vpn is for tether ... data charge ... ( Aircard... VPN on telus )

My friend have very very very old student plan @ 20 dollars with many retention bonus with no expiry data !
New plan can have sp.telus.com for free when you use mms ... thanks for the feedback !
