Secret Shoppers or not... If I don't have the product to sell why would I try and sell it.
That would be like me knowing at&t has faster 3g speeds in the area, so if someone wanting faster internet, I would just reccomend them to at&t.

Had somebody mentioned before the idea of "secret Apple shoppers" Verizon was sending around to see if we tried to talk them out of a iphone into a droid/other offering instead of hustling them along to the nearest corp store with a **** eating grin?
Just had an odd customer interaction, and was reminded of that post

We try our best to treat every one like a secret shopper so on the off chance it is, we did our best. But Im not going to set there and pitch a phone that I can not sell and then go hope on vzw.com and order it for them and let verizon keep 100% of the profit. I keep it simple, dont bash the product but state facts, phone is almost a year old, requires itunes and a pc/mac at home with internet, is limited to one design and is fragile. Usally I only have to use 1 of those four and pitch the advantage this other phone has over it and 9/10 they buy or reconsider. Steve jobs him self can walk in and Ill pitch the phone that I can sell.
My motto as a VERIZON agent- Treat the customer the way you want to be treated, if you treat them like crap dont complain when they treat you like crap. If I lose a sale I dont lose sleep over it I move on. Some people never buy from my store oh well $10 transfer fee. Some people are mad at the world, doesnt affect me.
One of our stores was pretty sure they got shopped by apple. One had a Blackberry, one had a Droid, neither would actually show the phone but both came in asking iphone questions like crazy.

Its in my stock so until its out I will still offer asking what my customer wants. I just run the "cost of ownership" comparison, if they want it I go on and give them what they want. I also am very clear about our exchange and return policy (basically open box = no return, doa = apple care) as apple has imposed.
going towards finishing the sale I do go over why they need a case and hold out for the chance of a droid covert at the very end... by then they can't be a shopper(no way apple will re-buy back their property just for a shopper, what they going to do? send them all to be marked as pre-owned?) .
the truth hurts apple so you cant tell me I am doing my job wrong. Your brand is expensive until other wise

This is getting ridiculous, first we pay $3500 for a display for a product that we make $30 on, so to just break even on the display you have to sell a hundred phones. Then, they want to secret shop you for a product that you will go broke selling? Please, secret shop all they want no one is going to push the iphone unless they have to.
Also, there are so many rules with the iphone as far as chargeback, phones you do not make commissions back, refund policys, etc. Selling accessories is a poor excuse as well, accessories has always been extra money if we now have to live off of accessories and make no money on upgrades we are fu*ked. Actually, we are screwed regardless the way things are going for the indirects!
I'm actually pretty happy with the way things are going. Our profit on the iPhone is more than yours and actually I can't complain. It's not too much terribly lower than we already make on the low end of some phones. Being able to have the iPhone just adds to our credibility with our customers and will keep some customer here rather than going elsewhere. Sure they did cost us a lot of money, and we may never make it all back, but I'm really not going to notice that money is gone. Heck, I don't even know how we pay for it yet, as I haven't been charged a penny.
The Iconic Devices tool also seems to be a good thing coming to all of us. Hopefully no more issues with new devices we can't get. At least this way we'll be able to still get the device for the customer and not send them elsewhere. Plus, all the devices that had been on allocation such as the Thunderbolt and Home Phone Connect have now been removed. Things are looking good for us.
"Our profit on the iPhone is more than yours"
How is your commission more on the iphone?
Does Steve Jobs know about this?
I doubt Steve Jobs controls what Verizon pays us for selling the device. Probably just the price we sell it for.
