Radioshack had a 10% off airtime sale back in Dec. I bought a couple of cards.
For my last round of cards, Target periodically has airtime for 5% off. (it seems this sale is pretty often) You can also get an additional 5% off if you use a Redcard, which stacks with the sale. I signed up for a Redcard just for this purpose. At checkout, I paid $22.55 for a handful of $25 top-up cards.
...and nothing will "fix" data "speed" problems until VM improves the network (or their agreements with Sprint). My speeds in the past 15 minutes:
465/190
570/312
242/296
205/217
940/264
823/475
All 3G with 4 bars from same spot. My guess is once speed hits "zero", even though data comes back up, the airplane or data "reset" is needed to get back on.
Okay, my bizarre network-toggling strategy actually works. I've tried it three times now and gotten a 3/3 on it, so at least this is more than a coincidence.
- Open Quick Settings
- Make sure Mobile Data is an available option
- Tap Mobile Data (not the enable/disable switch beside it)
- You should be in the Network Settings screen
- Tap Data Enabled ~10 times
- Make sure Data Enabled is checked when you're done
- Try Internet again.

Being new to VM/Optimus, I don't have a past history with the carrier to compare to. I activated my phone a few days ago, and since the beginning I have had a data reliability issue. The first day I had about a gig up and down on speedtest, then nothing, then 300, then nothing, then 500, then nothing...
When I tried to update the apps I had installed via USB, it would update part of one, die, part of one, die...finally got through them all.
Today I signed up for the free Angry Birds and after trying for 6 hours, I just got it. Now I am stuck on the second app I am trying to get from Amazon.
I don't know if this is typical or atypical behavior. Raising the phone price to $200 might make an impact on new customers if it is a load issue?
This is not something new. I had a Curve 8530 with Virgin and it keep always disconnecting from the network. I was sure that the phone was programmed to disconnect itself after certain idle time. My hypothesis was that as the Curve was a smartphone, a data intensive device, Virgin would have done something to restrict the access to the network.
I downgraded to an Rumor Touch and the same thing started to happened. This time though I was missing text messages. I got tired and felt that paying $25 for an unreliable service was not worth it.
I was tempted in again, however, when I saw the LG Optimus for only $130 at Best Buy. I was like "what the heck, even if Virgin is screwed over again, I will have a nice MP3 Player/PDA, an Android iPod.".
Well, same issues as last year with the Curve. If you call Virgin they will tell you the same thing over and over. Their network is having issues, their engineers are hard at work to fix the problem, and they they DO apologize but there is no Estimated Date on when the service will be fixed. Some dude even dared to tell me to try to access the web from the phone in 1 or 2 weeks! LOL
Virgin knows the issue, they won't do anything. That is abuse. I have filed a complaint with the FCC - let's see if the government can do anything - I truly hope so.
It seems it a practice on prepaid services, as I also have a Nokia E71 with StraightTalk and after a while the phone disconnects from the network and displays a "Connection Time-Out" message on the browser.
If you want 100% up-time service I guess you have to sign a contact. I have come to depend on data so much, that I am strongly considering Verizon as I am fed up by these issues as US customer going on TECH MODE and not getting paid for it.
Works for me. I'm renaming this "data flicker" until it's totally disprovenWell, it works as in, either fixes the problem entirely, or causes it to flake out as you mentioned.
Is it just me or do overheated phones behave badly?
This. Except I'm not rich enough to ditch Virgin Mobile, of course. Or maybe they really have been working on the same problem for the last year.

OK so I had tried other things to no avail. Thought I'd give this a go. Seems that it works simply because every time you attempt to hook up to 3G you have a 1/10 chance of getting a slot! First time I toggled the setting I was doing it fast, and noticed the 3G icon appear and disappear. Slowed down my toggling (oo-er) and got a signal on about the 6th attempt! I have 3G internet back!
(New OV owner after ditching the Rumor Touch because of its reboot issues every time you close Google Maps and sometimes when you close browser. Got 2 OVs for $49 each on Black Friday...)
Any potential problems if someone else buys the iPhone for me?
