Any idea what's so different about the Targa that is keeping it from having the same hardware issues the Etna has/had? I would hate to see the Targa delayed until who knows when for the same reasons.

Here's one way to think about it....
Every so often I go to local Ft Lauderdale or Miami Auto Shows, and they will have tons of cars on display. Some are already out there, others are in production, and other are still pre-production (or even concept). The Concept ones almost never come out, and if they do, they look far different than the (original) concept version. The pre-production units also sometimes may look different or have different features than the final production unit.
The same thing can be said here with the whole Bionic/Etna/Targa thing. From what I've heard, the Etna (Bionic) was originally planned to come out in Feb/March with the Droid X 2 not far behind. That way there would be a 4G and 3G phone out there from Motorola, and would have about a 6 month buffer until the Targa came out. Motorola showed the Etna (Bionic) at CES because it was functional enough for the show....the Targa mostly was not. At that time, they still hoped the Etna would be out by Q2. But because of the hardware problems that kept pushing it back, the release of the Etna and Targa would be too close together, and there was still no guarantee all the Etna's problems would be fixed. So they made the decision (and I believe it was the right decision) to cancel the Etna all together, and focus on getting the Droid X 2 out first, and keep the Targa on-track for a summer release (which was it's target all along).
I don't see this as a bait-and-switch, as some are calling it. I feel they made the right decision if the product was having hardware problems. Would you have preferred they released the Etna/Bionic and it be buggy?
The only problem I have with Motorola is that they are not being completely honest (like in the WSJ interview....if you can even call it that) where they said the Bionic was still coming out, but was delayed until the summer, so the device can have upgrades. That's being half truthful, and half lying, as the Bionic is just the name giving to it by Verizon, the Etna was the project name from Motorola, and that is what got canceled, the "upgraded" Targa is what is taking it's place. This is what bugs me when companies aren't honest.
Thankfully there are those who can leak out the truth behind the shadows, so we can know it.

I believe the Etna has an issue getting the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor to play nice with the Qualcomm CDMA baseband and the (un-named) LTE baseband. The Targa will most likely use a Qualcomm processor (that might be faster) which should not have issues with the baseband chips.
FAUguy, you mean a different dual core processor such as OMAP 4? Might it be the case that Tegra N chipsets may work better with HXSPA phones?
My 2 cents worth. FAU is on the right track.
The rest of Moto's Droid phones are all using OMAP processors right? So hopefully (I say this naively, as I really don't know the manufacturer differences amongst processors) any new Moto Android phones released in the near future will also house OMAP processors.

It is my understanding that the problems with the LTE modem handoffs do not effect data cards and/or Xoom because there is no CDMA-1X radio involved.
This is an oversimplification perhaps, but that is what I have been told by folks who understand the issue better than I do.
