Sprints deployment in the SE, even in populated areas of Florida like Boca and Boynton Beach is just miserable. They seem to only have sites on pre-existing structures that AT&T put up for 850mhz spacing. Anyone in Florida knows what I am talking about. (http://gallery.wirelessadvisor.com/s...&searchid=5949). T-Mobile, also at 1900 has filled in spots between these towers, where as Sprint never did.

And then they ignore it and make excuses for Sprint and say the southeast doesn't matter.. Just think how many customer's they have lost to AT&T and Verizon down here because of their lack of network. Even Miami, Sprint is poor, it's roaming right outside which is ridiculous when Nextel blanket's everything.

Remember, even if you put 1900 CDMA on every single 850 iDen site, you will won't match iDen's coverage. That is just a fact of the spectrum difference.

It shouldn't be that horribly different though because iDEN towers are spaced like 1900mhz towers for capacity reasons. And that combined with 1x Advanced it should be fine.

Not around here it isn't. I would say that in this downtown area in Michigan, there are 3 or 4 iden sites for every 1 CDMA site.

In Florida, in general, IDEN sites are not PCS spaced, so even if you colocated on all of them, you will not be able to match IDEN's coverage.

Actually, Miami is pretty darn good for Sprint. Now Boca Raton and Palm Beach, because of rampant NIMBYism and the lack of tall structures in the suburbs, suffer.

Well Sprint think's they can with 1X advanced so we will see haha. But when you leave Miami on the outskirt's it becomes typical Sprint.

Actually T-Mobile is just slightly better than Sprint in Florida. Verizon is much better than either of them, even though they are all 1900Mhz, on the east coast.

The problem with Sprint was that they ran out of money after the merger because they had to buy their own affiliates and Nextel Partners. Both they, and Nextel, were heavily indebted already, so they could not really borrow money. On top of that they had to have a $5B credit line to pay for rebanding.

I just hope they keep doing well, so they can afford to finish the Network Vision project. It's Network Vision or bust.

Sprint has not neglected Florida at all. There's a program that one of my friend's has that can show the cell site density/spacing before and after the Nextel merger. Florida has had a MAJOR expansion that is very impressive when you see the before and after layed out side by side and this includes pretty much the entire state. You could make an argument about how Sprint has neglected some areas in the SE like Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana but Florida and even Georgia are not part of that. Even over the past year they've continued to add a bunch of new sites. If you're not satisfied with all that Sprint has done there since the merger than nothing is going to satisfy you. Even if and when they do 1x advanced & 800 there's still going to be the same people saying things like "they don't have enough sites" or "it's not working as good as I hoped". Wait and see.

I really hope that 1x advanced and 850 works out for them whenever they get that going. But Larry, a tool can show you what the cell density looks like, but I would take the word of people on the ground like me over that. It is a 100% fact that they lack the necessary sites to be competitive in a major area like Bonyton Beach/Boca Raton area. Like I said, Sprint only has built out on pre-existing 800mhz, prior AT&T Longhorn microwave sites. T-Mobile did the same thing, but in the last year, I know of at least 4 new T-Mobile sites injecting coverage in between them. Additionally, one of Sprints sites is even just a little COW that is permanently affixed to a building, no higher than 20 feet high!

However, I don't want to jack this thread, so lets get back to the PTT/.

Larry, Florida is a huge state. It is also very flat and composed entirely of suburbs and exurbs. There are no readily available tall buildings around. Verizon and to a lesser extent, T-Mobile have taken advantage of every existing flagple and church steeple to thicken their coverage. Sprint has improved their coverage, but still has a way to go. Is it as bad as the rest of the Southeast? No, although West Florida is. I am very much looking forward to Network Vision and 800MHz CDMA. I think it will do wonders for them, if they follow through and execute their plan.

I am looking forward to more details on both the Network Vision project as well as how PTT fits within that plan. Hopefully we will hear more about it next week at CTIA.

Well, the discussion started veering off when some of us expressed the opinion that unless they improve their coverage, Qchat II will fail. They either have to equalize or better the coverage or limit the areas they sell it to to ones where CDMA coverage is equal or better than IDEN. Southern California, Las Vegas, the DC area, maybe a few others. But they definitely have their work cut out for them in the rest of the country. Now, from what I understand, this edition has a 1x fallback and so can work in roaming areas, but I wonder if the latency will suffer.
