A user from EVDO forums stated that the Samsung can be used as a hotspot while connected to a computer. If the Novatel 4150L is anything like the 2200 then the answer is No.

Interesting, the Samsung manual here: http://cache.vzw.com/multimedia/mim/...sto_manual.pdf

says it can't be used as a USB cable modem (p. 12 - Note: Samsung 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot does not support USB cable connections for use as a modem. The USB cable is for charging only.) But you seem to be implying that I can use it as a wireless hotspot while plugged in / charging. The flexibility of using it as a dongle would be really nice though.

Well, I should receive the Samsung this week so I'll let you know if this works. Although I normally don't have a mifi connected to the computer I'll do it just to see.

So after a little more research, it looks like this might be a point of differentiation between the Samsung and the Novatel.

Samsung - Can use as a wireless hotspot while plugged into the computer (for charging / not-draining purposes), but CANNOT be used as a wired dongle modem
Novatel - Can use as a wireless hotspot OR a wired dongle but CANNOT be used as a wireless hotspot while plugged into a laptop (but I think it can when it's charging to the wall - unclear).

The Novatel conclusions were based on info for the 2200, obviously it's subject to change for the LTE device.

To people who have switched from a USB device to the Samsung hotspot: Have you noticed any degradation in performance (other than what's to be expected from connecting multiple devices, of course)? I've heard one complaint to that effect, but it could have been just that one person. Thanks.

None of the 4g hotspots can be used as a USB modem. They dont support VZAM at all they activate automatically because they are 4g. The mifi2200 OTA version also doesn't support a USB connection at all I don't believe.

The mifi2200 will work wirelessly while plugged in to a power outlet charging. That's how most people use them. We sell them as peoples only internet source a lot and just have them plug them in and let them be.

Anyone know if you can turn down the wireless signal output on these things? Hide SIS ID?

Okay, got the Samsung today. Sorry, I don't see an option to turn down wireless signal output. There's an option to uncheck "Broadcast SSID".

The device only charges when connected via USB. The computer doesn't even recognize that a device is present.

I purchased the extended battery so let's see what the battery life will be. Hopefully, it will be better than the Thunderbolt.

Configuration of the LC11 is done via the web. VZAccess Manager is not involved in any capacity. Speeds are a little less than the Pantech UML290 but still fast. Now my iPhone and iPad will get LTE speeds.

    Just an update:

The web browsing experience is much more satisfying with the Pantech as compared to the Samsung. The Samsung is pretty smooth when working but exhibited too many stalls. It stalled on getting to vzam.net, rendering my ability to download the drivers for the Pantech useless. It stalled on other websites for the past hour. Thinking that it may be Verizon I switched to the Pantech but so far it has been consistent and fast.

I'll give it go for the Samsung at home tonight. If the stalls keep up then I guess I'll wait for the Novatel.

Well, the Samsung LC11 is on its way back to Verizon. For one thing, the extended battery didn't fully charge even after 16 hours. But the main concern is the Samsung's inability to provide uninterrupted data connectivity. While the Pantech delivers as advertised the Samsung struggles along making things rather frustrating.

I guess I'll just have to wait for the Novatel to see if it's any better.

Thank you for your updates. I was about to pull the switch, but now I will wait as well.

I am unable to hit LTE where i live as of yet. How is the 3g speed on this device compared to the Mifi 2200? Same or better?

If the device is not seen as a USB device, how do you do the initial WiFi setup on it? In other words, how do you get access to the configuration Web site on it before you have have set up the WiFi on it, if WiFi is the only way you can talk to it?

You turn it on and your computer sees it via wifi. The network name and password are preset. Once your connected you can connect to the internal up and change the default password or any other settings.
