I have noticed the problem on my MTS blackberry curve 8530 ever since end of March also. I called Technical support they put in a request with advanced technical support and they called me back today. They told me that what is probably happening is there are too many people using the towers at the same time and that it is congestion problems. they told me that i was the only person calling about it which i dont believe after reading this forum. Im thinking that there may be problems because of them launching the new network.
This problem was happening long before the new network was launched. There is a congestion problem with the CDMA network, and there has been since late last year. MTS even brought in a company to survey their network to figure out how to alleviate the issues we are experiencing. They basically said, there are too many people using the infrastructure, and the only way to fix the issue is to put up more CDMA radios.
The organization i work with has had more than 100 modems on MTS for more than 5 years now and we seem to always have had issues with them stopping transferring data intermittently. we now have over 300 of them and recently have been having a lot more trouble than previously. Seems the modems work for a while after a power cycle and then for some reason quits. We also have a large number that are stationary in fixed locations doing the same thing but they (with the latest firmware and self resetting setup when they can no longer ping our internal server) stop intermittently and start working on their own some minutes to hours later. Over the last several days the issues have been complete outages taking all of them down along with data services on our Blackberries.
Phoned tech support yesterday, i mentioned the problems I was having and that they have been mentioned by others on this forum. She did not want to hear that and insisted its probably a hardware issue specific to my blackberry style. I mentioned that my wife has the identical phone and its only a few months old, so she sent me some"books" over the phone and got me to reboot. She claimed that this should fix my problem. I informed her that i do get data services it just leaves and comes back, inconsistent and that i drive all around Brandon with the same problem. She stated there are no problems on the network, but maybe its tower specific. I again told her no as sometimes i have good data in one area and then it vanishes.
She said to phone back if this reboot didnt correct my problems. Well same problem tonight.
Mts technical support confirmed that they had some server issues over the last while. apparently they made a change yesterday which may have fixed things? will monitor to see if things are better now.
i have noticed my connection has been more stable now it is now at 1XEV all the times that i have noticed now but it could still go into 1X but i may not notice it. I think its happening to everyone but not everyone knows its doing it or not a lot of people see it happen.
Astroboy99, About the BB does it work well as a phone? garbled reception? any dropped calls? sounds like you may have a hardware issue. the problems we experience are with the modems working perfectly most of the time and then quitting completely. the blackberry I have from work usually receives email and sms even where voice calls won't go through. And it gets anywhere from 10 to 100's of emails every day. There have been a couple of outages in the evenings over the last week but then the display on the BB shows 1x not 1X and those have been confirmed as server failures at MTS affecting all 1X services across the province for some periods of time. all during the 9:00 to midnight time frame.
I rarely use my phone for calls. I don't notice the text messages duplicating/delaying as much anymore (it is still happening) but since my home internet is down right now I'm using my phone for browsing. It's still frequently dropping to 1X, sometimes the pages are slow to load, sometimes it will give a connection error. Not location or time specific either.
Another thing which is not commonly known is that MTS assigns the default channel using a complex algorithm that is based on the phone number. Some numbers will not be able to get to a data channel easily and others will. I know this because one of the phones i have will not download ring tones, etc unless i am outside Winnipeg coverage area unless i first call MTS and they do something on the system and then i remove the battery and re-install it. and then it only receives data for some time and then in a few days it goes back to not being able to download ring tones, etc. Never send it texts so i don't know if the channel affects it. you might be able to ask MTS for a more data friendly phone number.
