Mississauga Call Centre Massive Layoffs. Proudly Canadian MY A$$ !!!

I was laid off today from my job at WIND Mobile at the Mississauga Call Centre, along with A LOT of other people (including managers). They moved all of our jobs to Cairo (Egypt). So... what am I supposed to do with my family ?

Does the government give a crap ? Does any agency ? NO.

Is WIND Mobile in such disastrous financial trouble they needed to do this ?

WIND is currently in a legal battle to be allowed to do business in Canada... the reason is: they are not really Canadian. 100% TRUE !!! WIND wanted us to state to customers we are "proudly Canadian" and these mother****ers fired me today so that they can give my job to Egyptians and they expect whom to believe we are proudly Canadian ?

I got nothing against Egypt or Egyptians. BUT, don't pretend to be Canadian when Orascom owns you and you fire Canadians to give the jobs to Egyptians.

WIND is no different than the big 3. The terms and conditions of several plans include "subject to cancellation or change without notice". They also cancel customers on Infinite India who go over 1 hour a day, when they advertise it as "infinite". False advertising anyone ? WIND sent us an email this morning asking us to lie to the customers. They said "WIND is using external facilities in Peterborough and in Cairo to support our customers. We have considered other places but we feel we have a well trained, experienced workforce in both these locations to provide the exceptional support that our customers demand. These facilities have been in place since launch."

WRONG, these facilities were not in place since launch. When we launched, Mississauga was first. Peterborough followed, then Cairo.

Additionally, we had a town hall meeting some months ago when the rumors of the call center closing down were strong. Larry said to everyone "DO NOT WORRY, I ASSURE YOU WE WILL NOT CLOSE THIS CALL CENTRE. YOUR JOBS ARE SECURE" Why did he have to lie like that ? Why couldn't he give us an honest answer so that I would have looked for a different job in the meantime ?

Kudos to you Larry, to you Ken, and to you Tony. I've met all of you in person and I've shaken your hand. I was there at the initial training in Mississauga when even though it was all a mess, the collective excitement and promise of bringing change to the wireless industry in Canada invaded me and I felt part of something special. And today you fired me like a dog.

well this confirms my suspicions earlier this year, and many others who have reported such disaster occuring. Sorry you lost your job man, WIND is also pulling out all BlockBuster retail locations shortly and all those reps are on the hook to apply to blockbuster and be employed by them or risk losing their jobs all together.

What about every ASM being canned? and mysterious top-level execs always "resigning" and another replacement from abroad? you had to have had your suspicions. Especially when the manager of backoffice just suddenly packed up and left with out much notice back in Jan.

I really hope the best in your future. I hope no one starts getting fanboy on your ***, it's the last thing you'll need to read on a ****** day like this.

thats is super weak, dude. i would burn that mother f'n place to the ground if they pulled that shiit on me. If i was in your shoes Id be the whistle blower and call up the toronto star, sun, mississauga news, anyone who will listen. Maybe that will rattle a few cages.

    hang in there.
I cracked & signed up with Telus. I couldnt resist the Free Phone, $300 airtime credit, and EPP ($20+tax : 350mins, unlimited early evngs /wknds, cd, vm, unlimited NA txts, NO SAFS or 911) With the $300 credit its like having a free year of phone service.

I'm really sorry to hear about you (and your coworkers) losing your jobs. I would hate to lose mine, and I don't even have a family to feed so I can't even imagine how you feel right now.

Good luck in your job search and I hope you find something very soon.

I think wind holds these employees accountable for an NDA and remind them of such while firing or laying them off.

    lol @ Office Space reference.

Not a good move at all, imo. Outside of the obvious ill-feeling this will generate, outsourcing call centers = almost always lessening the customer experience, something Wind always likes to (in theory) focus on.

To the OP: Can't think of much to say in terms of comfort, I know I'd be furious if it happened to me.

It's cliche, but keep your head up, hang in there, and hopefully you can land something better soon.

Watch the op go work for rogers, now hes got a personal grudge against wind. Apply for mobilicity, they have call centers in Vaughn. But I can't believe they just mass fire everyone,no warnings so you can get another job. Keep your head up high, one door closes another one opens.

All the loyal employees who helped build Wind Mobile from scratch were fired today!

Shame on you Wind Mobile, Lacavera, Campbell and all the big shot execs for firing almost all your loyal Canadian employees, who helped you build this company from scratch! Way to go, that looks really good - NOT! Keep donating to charities and cut Canadian jobs instead of creating them, like you claim. What a bunch of cheap liars!

It looks like there has been massive layoffs, Wind Mobile let go almost all the Canadian Customer Care and kept some managers and no people to manage. Wind Mobile is outsourcing to Cairo, for salaries 10 times smaller. Do I want to get customer service from Egypt when my phone doesn't work? NO! Do you?...

What good is cheap if the service is horrible, the phones don’t work, billing doesn't work, customers are promised call backs that are never made?
Where are the simple plans and easy to understand bills?
Why to you charge me for away fees within my home zone?
Why do you fire people when customers are waiting hours on the phone to speak to someone - shouldn’t you in fact be hiring more?
Where's "happy employees means happy customers"?

So what do those massive layoffs mean for us, the customers? What do you think?...

To the OP, I am really sorry to hear that you lost your job, I really do hope you do find something, as other posters have said, apply at Mobi or any of the other Wireless providers! All the best.

That said, I am not the biggest supporters of Wind Mobile but I was excited seeing new competition coming in and I have been watching Wind Mobile thinking they would be the one to "usher in a new era" in the Wireless industry. After hearing this today it really makes me start to wonder how they are going to prove that they are indeed Canadian owned and operated, all I have heard is more and more jobs moving to Egypt(can't wait for the fanboys to defend this one ).

Again, I feel for you, I hope you are not without a job for too long.

Whether Wind is Canadian or not doesn't necessarily matter to me. When people lose jobs in Canada to offshore countries that is truly unfortunate. However, Wind is only the next in line to a long list of 'Canadian' companies... including Telus. Telus farmed off all their call centres to the Philipines years ago, and even resells their call centre there for other North American companies' use.

Further, Telus farmed out all their network design to India a few years ago. So when a new development is being built somewhere in Canada, and the copper or fibre infrastructure needs to be designed for routing etc, all that work is now happening in India. To cry that Wind is not Canadian because their call centres are overseas seems like a bit of a double-standard when comparing against the incumbents, who in many respects are probably less 'Canadian' than Wind.

Why is there nothing in the news about this?

I just emailed WIND demanding an explanation and I suggest everyone do the same. I called for a billing question a few days ago, and while the guy was friendly, I couldn't understand a word he was saying to me.
