Couple of points:
I bought an inexpensive one at Fry's Electronics (in the computer area, not the phone area) for $8.99. It works fine with my LG800G. If you buy one online, be careful - there is a "micro USB" and a "micro B USB". I have a useless micro B cable here. Maybe I'll need it for something someday.
I would always get cables form the computer area and not the phone places. Same stuff, but with oyuthe markup that a "phone" accessory has.
The connector on the phone is a microB. Some of the "phone" cables are not wired for data and thus are just for charging. If you are in the computer section you are very unlikely to find that.

Wireless. You cannot connect your phone directly to a computer. You can

This is not true. I can connect my 800g to my computer via a USB cable
It's true in the sense that it is unsupported. TF will not give you any assistance with it.
In part that's because until recently all of the TF phones had USB turned off in the software and they don't know that it's changed.
In part it's because they are not trained to troubleshoot the problems, so they just say unsupported.
I suspect they'll say the same about bluetooth file transfers as well.
One important thing to note about SD cards in this phone:
It seems that They MUST be formatted in FAT
many SD cards come formatted in FAT32 or NTFS.
In windows, you can do this by plugging in your microSD card, going to Computer or My Computer > and right-clicking that drive> selecting format> and choosing the FAT option from the drop down.
for other OS's, please consult your manual or a handy web resource.
Not true. Many people are using cards with FAT32 filesystems in the LG800G and LG500G.
FAT (aka FAT16) has a 2GB limit on Win9x, and 4GB on Win2000 and beyond.
To get that big you have to use 32kB clusters which wastes a lot of space compared to the 4kB clusters with FAT32.
And you will not find a new card with NTFS as the OEM filesystem. And you should never put NTFS on one.
NTFS modifies too much in the filesystem for simple read accesses. You'll push past the write limits of the flash quickly.
Confirming what ST Dog said, I have a 4GB microSD in my LG800G - I put it in without formatting it. I just confirmed that it is FAT32 - at least that's how it shows up via USB on my PC E: drive.
I have a Tracfone lg 800g and installed an amazon basic 4g micro sd card back in 9/2011. Everything worked fine until about one week ago when the phone could not see the card and I could not access the files on the card. After a few days though, the phone saw the card and everything worked perfectly again. But since yesterday, the phone is once again indicating that there is no sd card installed.
What is the problem? Is the sd card defective or is something wrong with the phone?
imveryconfused,
Are you sure it is securely locked in place? Try unlocking the cover, remove the memory card, put it back in place and make sure you slide the lock closed just to make sure it's making good contact. That's all I can think of to try.
Thanks. I did what you said - took the card out and then reinserted it and locked it in well. The phone is now showing that the card exists and I have access to my files. I hope this continues.
Being the tightwad that I am, I'm trying to avoid purchasing a 4 GB micro SD card for my LG 800G. I used an 8 GB card and tried to trick my phone into thinking it was a 4 GB card by partitioning the card, putting 4 GB into one partition and leaving the other unallocated.
Didn't work.
Does anyone know if it's possible to make the LG800 think it has a 4 GB card when it's an 8, or should I go out and buy one?

My wife's LG500G did that one too, after working fine for about 6 months.
I pulled the battery to reset and re-seated the card.
It's been good since (about 3 months).
I don't think it's either a card or phone defect. Just a software glitch similar to when it looses the SIM card or get stuck on the wrong network.

The size is stored in card's firmware and you'll not easily trick the phone.
What you are looking for is something similar to the jumpers on hard drives that limit the disk size.
But that relies on the disk firmware to detect the jumpers and change it's functionality.
I'm wondering if someone can help me, I installed a 4GB sandisk micro memory card into my LG800G tracfone, however the external memory doesn't show up highlighted so that I can change whether it will use external memory or internal memory and I"m not sure it is supppose to but there is a gray box with an x on the top of my phone now and I don't know how to get it off.
Also is there something else that I should do after I install the memory card in order to get the phone to recognize it? I hope that these questions make sense to somebody and that someone can help. Thanks in advance.

Just spend the $10 (or less) for a 4GB card.
Sigh. I was afraid it was something like that was true. Thanks for the info!
Tina - Leave the phone on. Remove the memory card and put it back in. Make sure you are positioning it correctly and locking it down correctly. Then turn the phone back on.
There is unfortunately a lot of counterfeit SanDisk. Make sure you got it from a reputable dealer.
I bought the card from Amazon.com so I don't know if it good or not, I'm hoping so but what I don't know is there suppose to be a gray box on the top of the screen with a red x in it or is that saying that it isn't recognizing the memory card, how do I format the card? What settings need to be set so that it will work, I can't find the instructions anywhere online and all tracfone tells me to do is to go under the mystuff icon and click on the memory card but that isn't telling me anything.
Thanks for your help!!!!! I really appreciate it a lot!!!!!
