    Samsung Galaxy Prevail USB Drivers

    Hello:

Am interested in getting USB drivers to tether as modem. Can't find the USB drivers for this one. Are they out yet?

(For some reason can't bluetooth tether either--strange).

you have a couple of options, use easytether, android market or its companion pdanet. Or if your rooted use wireless tether. the first 2 are usb tethering you wont be able to use https sites unless you buy the app but with wireless tether you can

Or download the hotspot widget from the android market. And make it a widget on a home screen then plug your phone in the charger, touch the widget, set it up, connect via your computers wifi and your tethering. Simple. That way you don't have to deal with drivers.

Pretty sure that is the wireless tether I mentioned, and you have to be rooted for it to work.

Hotspot Widget by Harold Muller. Is the app I'm referring to. Root isn't required. It gives you access to the Hotspot function that's hidden in froyo, is all. Works flawlessly for the optimus v.

The Hotspot Widget by Harold Muller does not appear to work on the Samsung Galaxy Prevail (or at least I couldn't get it to work).

But, if you root the phone, you can use this app with the Samsung Galaxy Prevail, and make an Ad-Hoc connection to it (your phone will show up in the list of available Wireless Networks as AndroidTether by default, but you can change the default SSID in the app's setup screens).

    https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_result

Scroll down on this page and you'll see some posts about it:

    http://opengarden.net/

Once installed on your Prevail, if you look at the About Screen for it, you'll see "Much Appreciation for Android-Wifi-Tether" under the Authors Section, noting that it's licensed under the GPL above that section). So, my assumption is that it's identical "under the covers" to the latest 2.07 version of Android-Wifi-Tether app, which is open source (licensed under GPL 3.0). Here's the source page for Android-Wifi-Tether:

    http://code.google.com/p/android-wif...plication.java

    More about that project here:

    http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

Here's a thread I found on rooting the Prevail:

    http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prev...lick-root.html

It worked for me using the script for Linux after making a minor change to it, as mentioned in this post:

    http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prev...ml#post2872896

I haven't personally tried the batch file for Windows (which is in the same .zip file). But, from what I can see from other posts in that thread, it should work fine.

It works fine with my wife's laptop running SimplyMEPIS 11 (linux distro using a Debian Squeeze base with a KDE 4.5.3 desktop)

The phone shows up as an Ad-Hoc network with an SSID of AndroidTether by default when I scan for networks. But, you can change the SSID to something else as desired.

Click on the image for a larger version, and you'll see AndroidTether is the second network in the scan results from both command line using iwlist and using the Network Manager Widget in the Panel:

I did check it last night to make sure I could connect, and it worked fine after setting the connection mode as Ad-Hoc using the Network Manager widget in Mepis and setting the security and password to match the application settings in the phone. But, I probably won't use it as I think Boost probably frowns on that kind of thing. Besides, my cable modem service blows it away for speed..

I haven't tested it via Windows yet, as this laptop no longer has it installed. I recently wiped the hard drive on this laptop to free up the space used by Windows when I upgraded her laptop from Mepis 8.5 to Mepis 11. It's a Dell Inspiron 1720 I bought a few years back that shipped with Vista was on it, and I'd left it installed in a dual boot config until the last Mepis upgrade, just in case she ever needed Windows for anything.

But she never used Windows with it, so it was just wasting space. Mepis does everything she needs in an Operating System, as she mostly uses Firefox for browsing, VLC for media playback, LibreOffice for docs and spreadsheets (she used OpenOffice.org before that in Mepis 8.5), and of course KPatience (an included card game in Mepis, because she likes to play solitaire). LOL

I use Mepis with a little Eee PC 900 16G I use, too. But, I've got 64 bit Win 7 on my primary desktop since I need to use Windows from time to time to run Camera Manufacturers' software when helping out with new camera reviews (I keep that desktop setup in a multi-boot config with multiple Linux distros as well as Win 7 on it).

So, when I get a chance, I'll boot into Win 7 with my Desktop and make sure the phone's Ad-Hoc network works OK with Windows (but Windows should be able to work OK with an Ad-Hoc network, and I'm seeing it fine from Linux, with speed via the connection just as fast or faster than I'm testing directly from the phone).

I haven't tried the Android-WiFi-Tether app it appears to be using "under the covers". But, the Open Garden "fork" of it works fine on my Prevail (I installed it and played with it for a while last night).

As you can see from this page, it's based on Android-WiFi-Tether:

    http://opengarden.net/?page_id=211

However, the developer's home page is interesting (discussing using peer to peer networks for a variety of purposes, via large ad-hoc "mesh" networks), so perhaps they've modified and enhanced the code (I haven't tried to dig into it to find out).

    http://opengarden.net/

BTW, here's another app I've seen mentioned. So, you may also want to give it a try if you don't have any luck with the OpenGarden tether program (which works fine for me).

    https://market.android.com/details?id=net.szym.barnacle

But, from what I can tell from reading some of the comparisons around, the Barnacle program is more "Generic", whereas the Open Garden and Android-WiFi-Tether programs take advantage of kernel level features.

So, I suspect the Barnacle program is going to be slower and eat more resources (and speed using the Open Garden branded tether program on the phone and connecting to it from a laptop tests just as fast or faster with SpeedTest.net as I get using the SpeedTest.net program directly from the phone from what I saw playing with it last night). IOW, I didn't see any drop in speed using a laptop via tethering using the Open Garden program on the phone, as compared to the phone connecting to a server directly using using speedtest.net.

Of course, that's not saying much (at least at my location in Savannah), as I'm only seeing speed testing at around 400Kbps using speedtest.net, which is *very* slow compared to my Cable Connection (although I did see one test spike to around 800Kbps for a few seconds). I get >18Mbps download and >4Mbps upload with my cable modem using speedtest.net when connecting via my router from a laptop using a Wireless G connection. So, I can't see using tethering for anything.

But, Sprint's signal is not the greatest at my home, and i haven't tried the phone anywhere else yet.
