    now that these phones are android, is there any way to hack them since we should have access to system files to basically software unlock them like docomo except is there a way for softbank?

    if that would have occured, then the x10 off att would have been unlocked, instead i am forced to pay 40 dollars for a code, since most unlocking services dont have the x10 on their list

    Android = locked down, meaning no access to everything unless you manage to root the device (tough enough on locked down European and American devices unless they gather a huge dev community following, so imagine phones that have limited market share like the Japanese ones...)

    And even then, access to _files_ doesn't imply access and knowledge and decrypting of the baseband, other firmwares, whatever circuitry and or software which controls the operator lock

    As an analogy, having administrator access on your own PC doesn't mean you can modify what's in your BIOS at will. Now of course you can reboot and access your BIOS and change settings, but imagine if that BIOS was encrypted and inaccessible.

    We're unlikely to see custom ROMs due to the locked NAND, yes. Root is a completely different story- root's already available on the SH-03C and a few other keitais.

    Sure but root doesn't mean having access to absolutely everything like unlocking the phone.

    The one story where that was true iirc was the European galaxy S where the operator locks were plain files available on the filesystem and thus available to a root user. Most phones have their operator lock outside the filesystem so it's tougher to get to.

    Damn my post skimming skills.

    I thought he just asked whether or not we can just hack the phone to access system files, and that'd be possible with root. Didn't notice the software unlock bit.

    SW unlocking and accessing system files are two completely different things so the answer to his question would be no (as you stated), unless it was like Galaxy S (and GSII, for that matter) where the unlock code was already in the phone.

    its not so much a new model as the "007sh unintentionally hilariously sexist edition"
    This was mentioned a few pages back, it comes in pink (the manliest of colours) and has a few different apps pre installed aimed at women, like for example a cooking app........ maybe even a sandwich making app for good measure?

    Wait, 2G websurfing works? I thought it was still the usual locked requiring hypersim and no internet.

    Android = unlocked apn blanks

    Technically, 3G should work for internet as well, assuming your carrier supports the phone's bands, but incoming calls won't work. Or will it, with a Rogers 3040 sim?
