Uh, maybe because its a SOFTBANK phone?

The Softbank Mail application is hardcoded to use the softbank servers. It was never intended to be used outside of Japan.
Part of the reason is to stop people using non-Softbank phones on their network here in Japan. So to retrieve MMS from the Softbank MMS servers, you need to specify a very specific UserAgent string, which is not in the standard MMS specifications. So they handle the connection stuff inside the Mail app, and use the APN *only* for the 3G connection.

Other mail applications (Go SMS, Handcent, etc) use the servers defined in the APN, and supply the UserAgent that is hardcoded in the phone (GO Sms Pro seems to be the only app that allows you to specify the UserAgent string yourself - whihc allows you to use it as a replacement mail application for Softbank.

lol I know it's a softbank phone but if I asked it's because I want to understand how it works ^^ I though the most important was operator in my case Bouygues

I don't use softbank mail app even if I can't disable it. I only use GoSmsPro to send and receive sms/mms.
So if the app use my APN, I really don't understand why I can't receive mms.
Only MCC and MNC can explain the problem

Thanks. I found in another thread somewhere where the person mentioned that they also couldn't change the MNC and MCC values, but leaving it with the default values of 001 and 01 still worked. I found out the reason I was having trouble was related to my plan.

    Hello,
I am new the keitais and the forums in general, so sorry if this is the wrong place to be asking, but my cousin just sent me a gift of her unlocked 007sh (she lives in Japan). I plugged in my AT&T sim while I was at LAX last week and it worked ok, but when I tried to use it when I got to Oklahoma last night, it keeps telling me that it can't connect to the network. Should I be adjusting the APN settings or something? Or is there a beginners guide on how-to set these up for dummies?

    Thanks in advance!

What does "unlocked" mean? If this means that a hypersim has been attached to your SIM card in order for the phone to work, this means you'll need to perform CPR. This consists of removing the SIM+hypersim from the phone, separating the two, inserting SIM card only inside a normal (non-Japanese) phone, waiting for it to connect/get signal (making a call isn't really necessary but you can just dial someone's number - they don't need to answer), then removing the SIM from that phone, reattaching the hypersim to the SIM, inserting both back into the 007SH and from the Mobile Networks menu, choose "Search for network". Bear in mind that the 007SH must be in GSM only mode if the CPR was performed on a phone which was in GSM mode, and in 3G - if the phone was in 3G, AUTO mode is not recommended).

Now, if your 007SH has been software unlocked, that is, you don't need a hypersim to use it, this is a different story. Try searching for network in 3G only or in GSM only. If that fails, try performing the same CPR procedure from above. And if that fails... hm... maybe the software unlock wasn't properly done?

What? Are there any reports of people who, having a software unlocked android keitai phone still need to perform CPR?

    No.

The 007SH only supports some of AT&T's bands so there might not be coverage in your area.

I'm pretty sure it's software unlocked, as I haven't put a hypersim in it ever. When I asked my cousin about it, she told me that she paid some really seedy looking dude in akihabara like 1000 yen to unlock it, so it very well might be the case that it wasn't unlocked properly.

Thanks, I'll try the CPR method here in a sec and let you know how it turns out. So far, my attempts at setting it to GSM and AUTO modes have failed, because while it finds AT&T and I can select it, it keeps telling me it won't register on the network.

I was under the assumption that AT&T operated separate bands for their GSM/3G coverage (850 GSM and 1900 3G), both of which I have always had full bars on where I live. Is this not the case?

And if so, I can still find the AT&T network on the phone. It's just that whenever I highlight AT&T and click on it, it sticks on a screen that says "Registering on network" for a while, and then tells me "Unable to connect to network at this time". Is this what would show up if it doesn't support the band that AT&T uses in my area, or would it not pick up AT&T at all?

Thanks for the quick response guys!

Can you ask your cousin for a bit more info on where she got it unlocked in Akihabara? I would be willing to pay up to 10x what she paid, in order to get mine unlocked! (for *research* purposes )

Seriously though, please ask. I live within riding distance to Akihabara (or a short trainride), so i am willing to go and get this checked out.

FYI, i dont think that the 007SH supports either of those 3G bands. 2100mhz is for certain, but not sure about what other brands are available

Lol I asked her and she just sort of told me that she was poking around and saw some guy in a booth/stall type thing selling the phone itself for 46,800 yen (an already preposterous amount IMO) and told her he would unlock it for another thousand.

I looked up the specs sheet and it says the 007sh is capable of 900, 1800, and 1900. Of course this is the same sheet that begs to dispute your 2100 claim, so I'm not sure how much I trust it :P. Seriously though, considering how much she paid to get this to me, and I know it works in parts of the US that have the exact same frequencies available according to a coverage map I looked up, I'd really hate to see this thing go to waste, or worse off, have to sell it for one that does work in my region

So, did you try the CPR method?
If that fails, borrow someone's SIM who is using another carrier to check if it's a phone issue (like the unlock failing).

I don't think it's a frequency issue - if the phone can detect it (and try to connect to the network but fails), it's not a frequency issue.

I know its a big ask, but can you ask her whether it was on the 'station-side' of Chuo-doori, or in the back alleys on the other side?

If she can point out a general region in the map below (i.e. "A3") it would help greatly:

I am not sure if they will be willing to talk to me if i am not buying a phone from them, but in the end, money talks right?

I tried the CPR method to only use 2g, or to automatically select 2g/3g service. Neither worked, unless I'm doing the steps improperly. I'll check with some of my tmobile friends to see if they have any luck, but at this point I'm starting to wonder if it might just be better for me to just flash the OS to a newer version of android (if that's even possible).

Also, what do you mean by "unlock failing"?

It's just making me frustrated to know that it worked at one point and now it's not.

I just sent her an email asking her, but knowing her and her sense of direction, I wouldn't doubt if she just sort of stumbled around and bumped into it without really knowing where she was. I'll post if she can give me a definite answer though.

    Thanks.

I agree with trying another SIM in it. I think it may just be a case of no signal on the bands it can receive where you are. You are right on those frequencies - 900/1800/1900MHz for GSM according to Softbank's website, as well as an undefined '3G' (Softbank uses 2100mhz for 3G so i suppose thats what it uses)

Ah well then that makes sense for the 3g to not pick it up, because when i did the CPR to 3G only it freaked out on me and didn't find the network at all, unlike when it just wouldn't connect to GSM.

I looked at the coverage map, and it said my area is 1900MHz for GSM, so I'm hoping that I'm just getting one of the settings wrong or that the sim is acting up. Does anyone know if I have to manually set the APNs for the GSm to work?
