I was at a drive in movie tonight and sitting in the wide open my Evo would not get a 4G signal at all. According to Sprint's website it should be full strength and be able to receive in buildings at that location. I've been driving around and at baseball games each location is rated the highest in signal strength, but nothing. I know there are problems with 4G while moving though.
At work while standing next to a window on the second floor by phone might pick up a signal for a few seconds but then drops it. Again full signal strength listed on the website. I can't even get a 4G signal while sitting in the middle of an open parking lot, again website lists full strength. I do get a good signal while standing next to a 3rd floor window. I think the signal is just not at ground level.
I don't know anyone else with a 4G phone to compare to. Does the Evo have any history of not receiving well, or does the Sprint website just plain suck at indicating coverage.
Edit: I just found the coverage section but don't know how to move this. Or do I just copy and past into another thread?
I have a theory. My friend has the EVO as well and her phone shows full signal strength, but keeps switching between 3G and 4G constantly. I think the signal meter itself is just showing voice signal strength because when I use my novatel mifi, I get between 1 to 2 bars of signal in the same location. The frustrating thing is the band that WIMAX is deployed on. A simple thing like moving to a window changes the signal from 1 bar to full bars.
I wonder if there is another way to see the signal strength of 4G on the EVO separate from the 1X signal strength.
VZW 4G and Sprint 4G via the MIFI 4G's in the Big D
4G on the Island of Puerto Rico! ...Unfortunately, VZ left the island so not LTE

Yes, there is. Go to the dialer and enter "##DEBUG#"
The nature of OFDM (and CDMA for that matter) are that the towers have to balance capacity, throughput and transmission power. The more people on a tower or the more loaded a tower is, the less effective coverage available from the tower. (This is different than GSM- GSM has a hard coverage and capacity limit). It could just be that since more people are getting 4G phones, coverage is suffering a little.
