I thought the hosts file can only redirect a host name to a numeric IP, not another host name? Is that not the case?
Search for socket://server4.operamini.com:1080 and/or socket://mini5.opera-mini.net:1080 and then make redirects that are the same length (including symbols) as those, but with http:// and ending with 80. I'll PM you with my own redirects, or you could just make your own. Your choice.

I did try replacing socket: with http: and :1080 with :80, but it still doesn't work in Socket mode.

That's odd, I can't find the Opera Mini servers in the binary on my iPod nor in the IPA I downloaded. I can find them in the Opera Mini 5 binary though.

Are you looking at the same build I'm using? v6.0.0.13548.

I have the latest build, whichever that one is. Also, I believe reksio.ini has an option to set Socket or HTTP. That might help the problem where Opera jumps back to Socket from HTTP.

It should be the same one. I'm using HxD as the hex editor and it has no trouble finding the strings (there are actually 2 sets of each). I've verified reksio.ini has DefaultServerType=Http in it, so I don't think the .ini file is the problem.

Sorry for waking up an old thread. Opera mini 7.0.2 is released and i just can't find the server adress in the binary. i need to change it, because that adress is blocked by our ISP. If you have any clue on where it can be i would be very grateful. Thanks in advance!

To see the addresses in the binary, first you have to decrypt the IPA file using a program called Crack-u-lous.
However, as of iOS 5, I haven't been able to get any edited binaries to work.

Ok, i found them, could you please explain how to make redirect of the same length to another server? Any ideas on how to make it work on iOS 5?

Here's what I got from Whizkid:
    Replace http://server4.operamini.com:80/ with http://tmobilesv480.mooo.com:80/

    Replace socket://server4.operamini.com:1080/ with
    http://tmobilesvr4-1080.mooo.com:80/

    Replace http://mini5.opera-mini.net:80/ with
    http://tmobilemini.mooo.com:80/

    Replace socket://mini5.opera-mini.net:1080/ with
    http://tmobilemini1080.mooo.com:80/

No idea. I tried it on 5.0.1, but never got it working. It would load and then immediately exit. There could be some kind of binary integrity check that I don't know how to disable. I haven't tried it on the latest Opera Mini and 5.1.1.

Yes, it doesn't work on iOS 5. What a pity... Anyway, thank you for your responses! I really appreciate that! Good luck!

You guys need to re-sign the modded binary with the ldone tool. Just google "how to sign binary with ldone".

Thanks, assuming it can be re-signed, will those proxy redirects still work?
I thought I read in another thread that URLs need to be prefixed with "u.web2go.com" instead of "tmobile" now.
