    iPHone and iPad 2 3g Data plan shared

    Hi,
    My girlfriend is going to buy an iPhone 4 from Fido with a voice and data plan agreement and I'm going to buy an iPad 2 3g. We are not heavy user so having two separate data plans for each device is kinda wasting. We want to share the data plan but apparently Fido does not do that.
    I was thinking, is it possible that I get another sim card from Fido, using the same phone number as my girlfriend phone line and use it in my iPad 2 3g? Will it work? If I'm not wrong Fido does allow us to have more than one sim card per phone line.
    Thanks for your help

    No it won't work since you can't get a SIM card that has the same phone number as another account (legally).

    It might be possible to copy your girlfriend's SIM card to another SIM card but this is illegal and even if you manage to do it, only 1 device will be able to be turned on at a time. If both devices are turned on or are on at any one time at the same time, the carrier's fraud detection system on the network will lock out the account.
    Fido (monthly plan - personal/data):Novatel Wireless MC950D or Nokia CS-18

    Rogers (pay as you go - Canadian prepaid): "Fido" LG Nexus-4

    Rogers (monthly BIS data plan): Blackberry Q10

    Red Pocket Mobile (US prepaid): Sony-Ericsson c510 or Sony-Ericsson w300i

    T-Mobile (US prepaid): unlocked Fido iPhone 3GS 32GB or "Fido" Samsung Nexus-S

    ^I believe rogers still offers data sharing (unless its the 6GB data plan) so if your needs warrant you can transfer your lines to rogers...
    (many pre-requisites so you may want to call ROGERS for more info).

    I am not sure how the data sharing works with Rogers. I can't imagine they program two sim cards with the same number to do this. However, like I said I am not sure what Rogers does.

    In any case, do you plan to have the iPad and the iPhone together at the same time? If so can't they be tethered and this way you can buy the cheaper WiFi only iPad and just use the data from the iPhone?

    Please if anybody knows if this is possible it would help me out too. It makes sense that you should be able to do it but I haven't had the time to play around with an iPad and my iPhone at the same time to try it out.

    Yes - if you have an iPhone 4 with a 1GB plan or more your phone can act has a wifi hotspot and your iPad, laptop etc can all read off it. If you do do this is suggest a larger than 1GB data plan. I always get to 1GB and that's just simple usage on my iPhone. This thing drinks data and I am sure an iPad does too.
    I'm not telling you anything that you can't just google for yourself

    ^data sharing means exactly that, a 2nd sim card that is valid uniquely for data and allows for you to use both devices at the same time; as much as tethering is a great tool you have to consider the battery drainage; the fact that both devices cannot be used simultaneously while in different locations;

    Pros and Cons to both ideas...

    hi, thanks so much for your replies. But my question targets a slightly different issue. I know about the hotspot feature, but that requires iPhone to be near the iPad. My question is that is there a way for me to use my girlfriend's data while I'm not around her? on Fido network? That means 2 devices can be used at the same time, but not at the same place.
    If there isnt a way, then how about can I just buy data add-ons plan separately from Fido and use it with my iPad? or that data addon feature only works with phones and not iPad?

    the only solution is to buy an ipad plan on either of the networks; OR access rogers/fido WIFI areas with your GF's login credentials as a fido customer;

    Data add on is for voice plans;

    I use Wi-fi tethering with my 6GB (retentions) plan. I run it on my Android, but the iPhone starting with iOS 4.3 also has "Internet Sharing" which accomplishes the same thing. I also use this for laptop tethering occasionally, it's really the smartest way to go since it costs only $30 a month for the data plan and doesn't require extra data plans/SIMs. In fact, I bought a Wi-fi only iPad 2.

    What you want to do is data sharing, which is ONLY available on Rogers and not Fido. Your best option is to sign up for the prepaid iPad options from either Rogers or Bell, they are relatively inexpensive and give you the flexibility to cancel and reactivate the service at anytime.

    ^even if they did have sharing; it would not apply to unlimited; best best is to use hotspot sharing with your unlim..; same result.
