Getting prepaid data on an 4g ATT smartphone ?

Hello, it took a little google magic but this thread is just what I was looking for!

I'd like to get a used android phone for the sole purpose of running an app called "Torque". (vehicle diagnostic tool) I've narrowed it down to an HTC inspire. My question though is if I get a used one from ebay or CL, and don't put any sim card in it or pay for any type of service, will I be able to connect it to my home wifi, download the app, and run it? Oh, and will the gps work or does that need a data connection? (the app uses gps, but it's not required).

I'm not looking to use it for phone calls or texting, just running that one app (and maybe a few others). If necessary I have a gophone sim card I currently use in a Razr V3. It looks like I could pop that in the HTC, adjust the settings mentioned here, buy prepaid data package, download said app, then replace sim card into V3 and return to life as normal with my blissfully dumb phone?

So am I missing anything here? Would either or both of these options work for me?

BlackBerry phones require a BlackBerry data plan for anything other than voice and SMS. Blackberry Service is not supported with GoPhone accounts. Additionally many of the traditional services are enabled with service books downloaded from the carrier. Some of the newer Blackberry phones have the MMS service books already installed. The Curve is not one of them.

On my BlackBerry Torch 4G the 4G works and is fine. Just activated the sim and started using it.

Thank you so much this works great. I don't know where you learned how to do this but my data is great and fast. I believe it is actually using 4G. At&t people said you cant use that phone on pre paid. HAHA this way worked our great for me. Thanks again so much.

I recently bought an iPhone 4s off amazon. I have been using the $50/month prepaid plan with at&t, on my regular Pantech "dumb phone", and want to switch it to my iPhone.
Will these settings make it so I am able to use it on my iPhone 4s $50/month plan, does anybody know?
