It really is a wonderful machine, despite its underpowered specs. And I've tried a developer preview of OS X Lion on it and the Air really shined there, felt like I was using an iPad, with a keyboard and all my apps rather than stripped-down or simplified iOS apps.

It's probably what got me hunkering for a Tablet again, after the Air eradicated my desire for them earlier in the year. Funny that LOL

If you don't mind me asking, how many were/are there now? Was it just that one? I want to pick something up if I'm in Tokyo next month lol. It's a tradition- one (or several) new expensive toys whenever I'm in Japan
When I was there, there were at least 2 - the one I bought, and a new unused one for 39800 yen.

Now I just looked at the site and it seems any that were left are gone. Meanwhile they have plenty of Aquos phones that popped up...

I'm sure they'll get some stock at some point, I just don't know when. I'll check again next time I go, I wanna see how much they'd offer for my SH-03C and my Nexus One... if it's enough, I'll gladly exchange that and some money for an Aquos phone...

It is, surprisingly, not that underpowered. I can actually play MW2 at native res/high graphics/AA off smoothly lol.

Since that website doesn't give you offers over the internet, I checked the 'buying' price of the SH-03C, SoftBank Desire (closest phone they have listed) and just for giggles my old 940SH on a somewhat well known Akihabara store which specializes in dealing with used goods.

Mm probably should have bought a smartphone with better resale value...

This place does give a bit less than some other stores from what I hear so you'll probably get 10k for your lynx. Makes me feel sad.

And just in case you're wondering-

and they'll sell one to you for...

Well I don't buy devices with focus on resale value... I usually buy them so they can last me a while and be useful. I'm just getting caugt up in the upgrade frenzy I guess haha

    Janpara ( http://www.janpara.co.jp/)

They have 4 or 5 stores in the akiba area and several more across Japan.

Yeah I understand that, but it's still pretty sad to see a 2 year old 'dumb'phone worth more than a year old smartphone lol.

I guess I'll make a video review soon, just like I did with the sh-03c in december.

Managed to get spmode email working today, though it requires taking my sh-03c sim card and putting it in the Pad. Then again I almost never make calls so it could be a nice arrangement lol... if docomo doesn't charge me through the roof for using a smartphone data plan on a data only device.

Would be great. It was hard to resist from buying one of these tablets when I stayed in Japan (btw. the "janpara"-price in May was 60000 YEN). Instead of this I bought a used "new" SH-03C (Lynx 3D) for 22000 YEN after watching your review on youtube

Aha sweet. Glad i made a difference. I'll make the video either in the coming week or after my relative goes back home in mid july. I'll be familiar enough with the Pad by then to make a nice review (I hate all those pseud reviews found on google/youtube which are nothing more than a hand-on with the unit at the store or the event where it was announced, and not a review of actual usage).

I'll announce it here for sure

Hm, interesting. Is that place online-only or do they have some sort of physical store?

Also- is there any way to root it? Sorta important since I have several titanium backups with apps (reinstalling them all manually would take eons lol) I'd need to install.

Contemplating trading in my SH-03C and 940SH for an unlocked SH-12C instead now, if 'goroh_kun' at XDA actually knows how to root it. Hasn't replied to my PM yet though

No clue, they do have a presence in Nishi Shinjuku but hard to say if it's a store or just office.

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=13522323

Some reports there of people who have managed to root it using the same method as the G-Slate (same hardware but on T-Mobile US), though most reported it was more difficult to get in "APX" mode where they can flash stuff with nvflash

Not having tried, and not having researched the matter, but knowing I've had issues restoring apks+data between, say, cyanogen and miui on my nexus S, I wonder how stable the apps would be when restoring from Android 2.x to Android 3.x...

I don't know about the SH-12C, but through google/twitter searches I did find a zipfile containing scripts and a PDF (in Japanese) explaining how to root the SH-03C and IS03, whether they got Android 2.1 or 2.2.

I haven't trusted the google-translated PDF enough to even try though. From what I can understand, with 2.1, it involves exploiting a vulnerability with the font renderer by installing a font and using that to attain root privileges. Not sure which method is used for 2.2, doesn't seem to involve the font but another vulnerability.

Alright, thanks. Probably going to go to ecomobile then, if I'm in the area.

Ah yes that's an issue I hadn't considered.

Maybe I should just get an iPad 2 and be done with it

Interesting... if you do find a way to root the sh-12c let me know

yeah... where'S the fun in that?

(well ok, the fun is in the fact that everything just works and you don't have to fiddle and tweak and pray, except praying that you'll get new features in the next update).

Frankly this is what's bothering me and often tempting me to go to the iOS world... as fun and as cool as Android is, there's always something missing, some element lacking in quality/finish/polish, always some shady deal going on (i.e. why a 79000Ą tablet WITH a contract?????? why should a phone be sold with an un-erasable movie, as part of a marketing deal between a studio and manufacturer??? shouldn'T the phone/tablet be good enough on its own, without needing this additional promotion/push that will fizzle out as soon as the next phone/movie comes out anyway??), etc.

I've been a fan of Macs for a long time, owned a few, etc, I love Android, but there is one big thing separating the Mac/iOS from the Android world:

    - Apple creates devices to sell them to consumers (i.e. builds them and markets them to appeal to consumers). Often this means that features won't show up unless they decide it's workable.

    - other manufacturers create devices to counter Apple (i.e. their goal is not to make something that will appeal to consumers, but to make something that will, on paper, have the same or more checkmarks as the Apple product has, on their comparison charts). Often this means features will show up, but won'T be tied together nicely or will be beta (that's the Google syndrome there lol)

I like both approaches... lol.... I like that my Mac just works, has good battery, will last a few years (even if I replace it, someone else will be using it a while after).. I like that Android can be customized for different markets, and its tight integration with Google. It's just.. still rough. Especially on tablets.

One way or another I don't think tablets are ready yet as full-fledged computing devices, whether iPad or Android, so it's just nice to play with them and kinda see where things are going. They're good for some things, i.e. reading, watching vids, email, twitter, etc. Honeycomb, even in its rough state, handles multitasking beautifully and I've found I can even do some "serious" (sysadmin) work with it easily enough, which was surprising. It's not just for "media consumption" like people keep saying about the iPad.

Might as well get used to it, OS X Lion is the start of the merge between the UIs of iOS and Mac OS.. heck even now on my (Lion developer preview) Macbook Air's physical keyboard, if I press and hold a letter instead of getting, say, ooooooooo , I get a popup with the different accented letters based on o (ôśşö and so on...) ... loll

That's where I'm at presently anyway, in my opinion of tablets. It's the start of something new (Forget the previous tablets, they only share the name not the actual functionality, design and vision), a new direction in computing, maybe that's why everyone is so intrigued by them, and everyone is rushing/floundering/flapping to make tablets or to try them.

Great, another place to check out. Thanks

Damn I'm going to end up with an empty wallet...

yeah... where'S the fun in that?
I'd know everything's going to work seamlessly with my meticulously organized iTunes library and my already-purchased apps

(well ok, the fun is in the fact that everything just works and you don't have to fiddle and tweak and pray, except praying that you'll get new features in the next update).
Being a 'let's-screw-with-this-working-thing' kind of person means I'm still going to fiddle and tweak There's a larger indie community for iOS though, or so it seems.

Apple can't really compete on the hardware front, but they sure as hell can on the user experience of general polish. Android-based devices are the opposite- excellent hardware coupled with software that will be sorted out by xda or something

Part of the reason I decided to go with an air over, say, a new Dell or HP.

The Vaio Z (imo) is the only thing that's come close/surpassed the Mac experience so far, and with the new one out... damn I'm tempted. That too just works, has an astonishing battery life and the cf housing sure as heck will last years.

Just take a look at my friend's VPCZ1 Still looks new.

One way or another I don't think tablets are ready yet as full-fledged computing devices, whether iPad or Android, so it's just nice to play with them and kinda see where things are going. Hm I see tablets in another way- consumption and not production. I've tried logmein but it's just too slow and work on the onscreen keyboard isn't as fast/comfortable (and my fingers slowly slide over to the right churning out words ;olr yjod).

Maybe my uses just aren't suited for tablets. If it works for you then great- I'd love to be able to ditch the keyboard & the additional weight but I can't.

Might as well get used to it, OS X Lion is the start of the merge between the UIs of iOS and Mac OS.. heck even now on my (Lion developer preview) Macbook Air's physical keyboard, if I press and hold a letter instead of getting, say, ooooooooo , I get a popup with the different accented letters based on o (ôœşö and so on...) ... loll
You're one of the few people I've seen who actually likes Lion (no offense intended, just observation). I personally can't stand the 'Mac x iOS' motif & functionality going on- imo it doesn't translate well to use with keyboards. Maybe some features are great when ported over (like the accented letters thing) but the Launchpad and thew new integration of Spaces&Dashboard make everything a jumbled mess.

Might actually stick with SL this time round Hopefully Win8 lets the user switch off the Windows Phone interface or something like that.

That's where I'm at presently anyway, in my opinion of tablets. I can see where you're coming from...

Actually I agree with you- this is the next (logical) step in mobile computing- ditch the kb and optimize touch interfacing. There really isn't much to fix in the mouse-and-keyboard desktop OS any more.
