It's been a while, but I wanted to check on this upgrade issue.

Does the DoCoMo SIM need to be active in order to upgrade? If I borrow a friend's SIM for the upgrade will that work? Does it need to be a smart phone SIM? Does the upgrade actually use the SIM owner's data if the upgrade is done over wi-fi. Finally, does anybody know what version this device can be upgraded to?

Bonus question: Why did they shut down the DoCoMo shop by the north exit of Shinkoiwa station?

    Thanks!

From my experience (with a Sharp android), they expect you to use 3G data to do the upgrade. The SIM needs to be active, and data enabled. Supposedly you dont get charged for the data, but i wasnt willing to risk it on my work colleague's sim as he does not have a data pack.

Also tried it using an MVNO, as they use the Docomo network too, but no go.. .Has to be Docomo branded

But this is for minor software version updates - it doesnt upgrade the base Android version. The Major updates can be done via Wifi.

Does anybody happen to know what the latest base Android version is available for this device?

    Thanks,

Doesnt look like there is any major updates available for this phone:

Only a small update to let you get area-mail (earthquake alerts?)

Your best bet is to see if there are any custom roms available overseas; checking xda-dev etc if they have had any progress hacking it.

Thanks for checking. I guess there's probably not much of a chance of there being an upgrade of that model to Android 4.

    Virtually zero.

Unless you can root it and unlock the bootloader to allow you to run custom roms. There might be someone overseas with a custome ICS ROM
