Hello folks. Purchased Nokia E63 from Craigslist. Before I explain the problem, let me just say that I am not a newbie and do know about frequency bands and such. So no, it's not European/Asian version of E63. It's the Rogers one with Quad GSM and 850/1900 HSPA.
The problem is that the phone can not connect to 3G network. It's always in 2G mode (on my unbranded E71 which I used to own long time ago, the 3G icon always used to come up during data transfer, but on E63 it's always E for EDGE). I am in downtown Toronto, so it's not an issue about living in rural non-3G area. Heck, iPhone 4 is sitting next to it using 3G network.
Can anybody tell me what the problem is. I do know 100% that it should connect to 3G network automatically, there is no "switch" or account settings to be enabled...if the phone sees 3G network, it connects. So what could be the problem guys?
Even the option for enabling 2G/3G is not there like it used to be on E71. I used to "force" E71 in 2G mode when I was low on battery. But the option is simply not there. The only option under Network Settings is Network Selection (Manual or Automatic). No "mode" option for forcing the phone only in 2G or 3G.
Thank you!

E63 is UMTS not HSPA. You're stuck with 2g it looks like. So it won't work on Telus at all.
stupid question, did you setup the internet.com apn?
gregorie,
Greetings.
UMTS is the 3G that has been deployed by Rogers, Bell and TELUS. HSPA is just the iterations (3GPP releases 5 and 6) of data enhancement in the UMTS. Just like the GPRS, EDGE in the GSM. Regarding why many could not make their Nokia E63-2 (RM-449) work in 3G is likely the PRI in the firmware has crippled the toggle for UMTS operations.

Only 2G is enabled by Rogers and the phone is already unlocked if purchase from Rogers, to get the phone working with Telus or Bell under 3G UMTS 850/1900 network, change the product code and reflashed to updated firmware 510.21.010 RM-449. I have done that and my E63-2 is working under both dual bands, the way it is supposed to- as manufactured by Nokia.
Follow the original user's manual, it will show you that some functions are missing under Rogers' E63-2 ROGCA model in MENU-TOOLS-SETTINGS-PHONE-NETWORK. Only automatic and manual settings are available. After change, the original is back: (network mode, there should be 3 options- Dual mode- UMTS-GSM).
shopcoholics88,
Greetings.
Thanks for saving my time to further explain. I have done the same with many other Nokia handsets over the years... be it S40 (like the Rogers' 3555c http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...5#post13436455 ) or S60 (like the N8 http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...9#post14123909 ).
