    SonyEricsson Chat Support FAIL

OMG, their Chat support is HORRIBLE!

    {What is your name and question}
    Matthew
How do I restore a backup made with X10 Backup?
Please wait while we find an agent to assist you...
You have now been connected to an agent.
Agent Wilken: Hi Matthew, thanks for choosing Sony Ericsson Chat Support. My name is Wilken your Xperia™ Support Representative. I'll be glad to help you with your question today. I'll be right back to you with more information in a moment.
Agent Wilken: Thank you for holding. Follow the link below for step-by-step instructions. Here is the link: http://www.sonyericsson.com/update/B...10?lc=en&cc=IT
Agent Wilken: Is there anything else I can help you with today?
    Matthew: Yes.
Matthew: So, I don't see a restore button. In small print at the bottom, I do see a note of the backups I made, but only the backup button is shown.
Agent Wilken: Then you didn't do a back up.
{and less than a minute later} Your session has ended. You may now close this window.
    For reals.

My experiences with other Chat support reps have been almost as bad.

Anyway, can anyone help me with the underlying problem? SE support says I have to upgrade in order to be able to restore the backups (which I can't restore, but CAN see and overwrite if i hit 'Back up').

I got an X10 from AT&T 2 weeks ago; it STILL has 1.6 on it. :-( What's a good way to upgrade?

I've unlocked and jailbroken iPhones, but I'm an Android newbie.

Is there a way to install the "custom Froyo ROM" or "Generic NA firmware" mentioned above using a Mac running Mac OS X? I was unable to upgrade it (to 2.1, which just became available for AT&T-branded X10s) using my old laptop running Windows XP, even with 'help' from SE via chat. Perhaps my laptop is too old (the USB ports are 1.1) or the X10 is defective (a refurb I bought directly from AT&T that case damage shows clearly had been dropped a few times).

I'm thinking of installing Windows XP in a VMware VM (on my MacBook Pro) just so I can try again; what a PITA. Both PC Companion and Update Service failed to update the phone; at the appropriate time, I put it in firmware update mode (Plug the USB cable into the powered-off phone while holding the back button.) but nothing happens for a while, and then the phone turns itself on.

It seems like it would be smarter to debrand it, as it'll surely be a LONG time after Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is released for the X10 that it is available for AT&T-branded X10s. If I debrand it, it should be easy to upgrade to 2.1, and to 2.3 when it comes out for the X10.

It's a refurb; I want to act quick so I know if it's defective before the 30-day warranty runs out.

I've looked at http://www.howardforums.com/showthre...h-for-your-X10! and a couple threads like that and there's a bit too much jargon for me to follow the instructions. I downloaded full.package.zip, and it doesn't seem to contain a README or anything like that. I've no idea where to start. Figure out how to root it? Find xRecovery? Find, install and use APN Backup? I guess I have to root it first, as {enable "Unknown sources"} isn't possible currently. I guess I could post to eric will's thread if I don't hear back here...
