Wanted to get the Moto Q9h but I think I'm gonna wait. I wonder if the other previously working phones are still on data or not.

    On more relevant matters.

The Att forum had a mod saying that they do sweeps to knock out smartphones on this plan for data. May be this.Could be a fear tactic, could be real. Could be both. Hard to say exactly. Many factors. It's up to the poster/tester. It's their data and discovery. They can post it publicly or pm and privately. Up to them. Incorrect apn settings, signal strength, imei number series, simlock , activation procedures are also possible variables. And we haven't had other confirms other then the two Winmo devices.

In a worst case scenario kind of way, yet not, there are still many options of getting data on smartphones including buying a data pack, wifi, Att mvno plan, other carrier plan. Really a small roadblock if indeed it is one.

And if they are all blocked, it was fun. Absolutely.

Test and post. It's up to you . It's your device, your discovery and your information to share or not.
Yes, Jet loves to always be correct and will attempt to smash down anyone in his way. I do not condone his actions.

That said, ATT has no rhyme or reason for blocking phones. January 2010 they started forcing the Nexus One onto the $30 PDA plan, despite the fact that at the time it did not work on AT&T's network, and could only connect via EDGE. So it really doesn't matter, they know which ones are smartphones and which ones arent.

The best for phones to use this loophole are T-Mobile ones with the 850 or 1900 UMTS bands or from Bell Canada (and other international carriers). Those are the ones historically not picked up by OLAM on the postpaid side.

    Idk. Last time they weren't.

For smartphone data on Att network prepaid if your smartphone won't work, you can always:
    1)Get a phone with wifi.
    2)Buy a data pack.
3)Use an Att mvno with more data and costs less.
4)Some combo of the first 3.

Not perfect but then again, even unlimited data on this plan is not as fast as
    1)Att postpaid
    2)Data packs added normally.

Hi, guys. I'm new to the forum, and this discussion thread is very interesting....and a bit confusing! I was just wondering: let's say I found a compatible smartphone. How exactly would I get the GoPhone plan to transfer to the smartphone? I am a beginner when it comes to complicated cell phones. What steps would I take to transfer SIM cards or whatever I need to do?

Well the GoPhone plan is connected to a SIM card. You can go to an AT&T store and they can get you a SIM with the $50 plan. Then all you do is put the SIM card into the smartphone. You may have to adjust the settings of the phone. If so, some settings for proper data operation were given earlier in this thread.

We have a lot of confirms on Moto q9h failures, Att type I'm sure.
The Tmobile mytouch is running in 2Gsm EDGE mode only as it has no Att 3G mode radio. I'd run that phone on Tmobile's $50 plan. At least that way you get 100 megs of 3/4g at Tmobile frequencies at the same price.
Or for another 10 bucks, put it on Simple Mobile's unlimited everything plan (though it is a 2 gig 3/4g cap and throttle after).

Get you a att or unlocked smartphone. Buy a refurbished straight talk E71. Activate it on the unlimited $45 month plan. Put straight talk sim in your att or unlocked phone. Change apn for data/mms. Tada. Straight talk uses At&t postpaid network. Not prepaid. And roams on tmobile. Must be one of their Nokia smartphones that use their unlocked Sims and sim must be activated in the St phone before swapped.

That would be a variation of my suggestion number three: use an Att mvno with more data that costs less. That's one WELL KNOWN alternative but a lot of people don't feel like doling out $100-200 for a phone that's rendered useless. You're basically paying for the sim.

If you want Unlimited data on any of the phones that won't work on the Att feature phone plan it might be taken into consideration but $100-200 is 2-4 months of the plan that you could be using it for. Even a used iphone can be bought for that much on CL.

Nothing wrong with it, just not something I'd personally prefer to use as an alternative at this time. (the ONLY true byod loophole ANY America Movil company has besides their Straight Talk Verizon phones being usable on other Verizon mvnos like Page Plus).

Some people would consider it, others wouldn't as another route. Thanks for posting it though. Other Att mvnos offer less then ST and cost more ($50 utnt/mms/250 megs) but they also don't have as much hassles with byod.
