T-Mobile is pretty good in San Francisco proper though not as good as Verizon CDMA. AT&T coverage is maybe a little better than T-Mobile's but more prone to dropped calls and data outages. I don't get out of the City much but when I've been in Silicon Valley and the East Bay T-Mobile has been fine.

all help given is free, and as is. I'd hate for someone to try and sue me for a mobile bill

I was visiting the fremont, hayward, and palo alto areas with my Straight Talk iPhone and wasn't having any major issues. I didn't really make calls, mostly texts and data usage. 3G coverage was covered in those areas :-) Make the switch to Straight Talk and start saving! Just be aware of it's "data limitations" even though you sign up for the $45 Unlimited Everything plan*.

Dopped calls with the iPhone on AT&T has been an issue since its introduction, LoL.
