    does 1seg use data?

hi all. im in japan at the moment using a 922SH i bought a few years back with a softbank rental simcard. i kind of want to try out 1seg, but i cant confirm to myself that it does not use data. seeing as softbank will be charging me $25.00 or so per meg i dont really want to take the risk. so does 1seg use data at all for video or is it safe for me to use it?

thanks and sorry for making a new thread, i did just spent an hour looking though.

    Short answer: NO

1seg receives broadcasts from a signal that is completely different from the mobile network. I think you can even watch 1seg without a SIM card installed on docomo keitais, but don't think you can with SoftBank.

1seg shouldn't use any data. I think even the text based ads and weather forecasts etc are sent over the broadcast.

You'd have to ask someone on here to check for you to know for sure- if you get the little circular 'browser' symbol on the top status bar it means you're using data. There's a data meter somewhere in Settings so you can confirm there (if the number goes up, your bill goes up).

1seg is ISDB, terrestrial broadcast TV, pure and simple.

    If only, if only.
