I second ebay... as long as you make sure the esn is good... There was a large reseller called recellulartoo that sold really nice used phones for reasonable.. but lately the have pretty slim pickings at least for verizon phones...

I'll second ebay as a source for cell phones. I've gotten lots of phones there and have had no problems.
One just needs to decide between new, gently used, heavily used or beaten up and then read the descriptions. Some phones are much more popular than others, so if you are flexible you can get good deals by not getting fixated on a particular model if that one model is too popular.

The reason nobody is directly answering your question about the Chinese phones is that nobody knows. Until somebody actually tries it, it's anybody's guess how much work/hacking it will take to get Page Plus settings into a non-Verizon, non-branded Chinese phone. If you can figure out how to manipulate the NAM settings, and load a Page Plus PRL, then you could probably get calls and SMS working. Getting data working would be a much bigger issue.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it would be possible, and it would undoubtedly be a fun project, but not one for the faint of heart.
kri5tian, have you had any updates and trials since this was last responded to? I found some phones that look just like the iphone and the galaxy, from china, without apple or samsung brands, and they both have wcdma and gsm capabilities (supposedly).
Anyone have any experience? These phones are new and by far cheaper than other used and relevant options on ebay.
Here's one example I found, all the others are from the same seller I think. This one looks like a iphone 5 ripoff, that runs android... strange but interesting...
I cant post links yet, so its at aliexpress dot com.
I bet most of these Chinese knock-offs are not "Verizon approved" So they may get kicked off of the network if there are problems. This is similar to PTCRB approval for GSM phones.
