I believe as long as a phone has Blur on it Motorola will not allow anyone near their proprietary files. If it was stock Android I think they would unlock but its not so I think that the Bionic will be locked and encrypted. As the saying goes "it will be a cold day in hell" moto unlocks their Blurred phones

Regardless though. Verizon has got to allow it and I do not ever see that happening.

Even though they essentially promised as much when they were bidding on the spectrum from the FCC that is now being used for LTE.
Motorola is the only manufacturer on Verizon that locks down the phone boot loader this hard though. The only exception is the DROID incredible 2, but even htc is admitting that was a mistake.

Also, its not solely a carrier issue, since the original UNLOCKED Milestone is locked down just as badly as the locked blur models. I think it's Motorola that's the issue...

Yes but the code is here now, have you noticed how it took days to port it to all the other devices?

And to all the people responding to me earlier, I never said anything about changing the kernal. You can overclock without even touching the kernal. Setcpu cant oc, that's not what I'm talking about. Google the overclock method for the dx.

I believe the phone will be rooted fairly quickly. Without Moto unlocking it, it might be a long time before CM ROMs appear.

Sounds like you were saying you can flash oc kernels on any rooted device. Huh

I guess I misunderstood when you said "no root wont allow customs kernals"

The X2 has been out since the end of may and it just got clockwork recovery. CM7 is a long ways away for that device. We will not see anything worthwhile on the bionic for a long, long time if ever.

Not going to dispute that Motorola is overly extreme in how they lock their devices up and that that is probably mostly their own choice. They seem open to changing that now though or are at least saying they are. I could see this as something they have done as much for carriers as their own concerns also though as I don't think it's something ANY customer actually WANTS. Pretty sure customers either want something unlockable or don't give a darn either way/are clueless.

I just have a feeling VZW would really prefer to keep everything locked up. Shoot I think they were sorta scared of smartphones for years after the rest started pushing them hard, partially because of stuff like this that allows devices to do more on their network. Now that they have tiered data for new peeps though I think they should loosen up.

This is true, but when you flash an OC'd custom kernel, most of the performance boost isn't from being OC'd. Overclocking really isn't that big of a deal.

Has anyone been keeping up with the Atrix news? It has an unlocked bootloader now, right? Now there is news that European Atrix owners have an unlocked bootloader. Its happening right now as we speak folks. Hopefully for those that care it will trickle down to other Moto devices. I think with other recent phones on their network with unlocked bootloaders, Verizon allows it.

There's been a fair amount of trouble rooting Gingerbread for a lot of devices, so I wouldn't count on it happening right out the gate. But hopefully, with the large amount of developer support that's likely to be there, it won't take as long as it's taken for other devices.

This is not an official Moto unlock update in anyway. A file was found at Orange UK for their Atrix and the XDA hackers have apparently been able to create an international unlock from it. Seemingly sounds like pure luck and not anything done deliberately by Moto so much as some unlock file Orange UK didn't have protected well enough.

It had to be an official unlock from Motorola for at least some Atrix phone somewhere, otherwise there is no way that the bootloader would be unlocked. That XDA was able to extract what was needed to unlock other Atrix bootloaders is irrelevant.

I heard that the unlockable/lockable bootloader feature ala Xoom was included in a pre-release Gingerbread build that was being tested by a user.
