Why is everyone messing with phone-based file managers?
Plug in your phone, execute 'adb shell', and modify files as needed

Why? Well, I can figure out what the first step there means...

I am NOT responsible if you do any harm to your phone.

    Requirements:

    Notes:

    • I silenced the audio in the original files. This kept the files the same size but made them have no sound. If the files are just deleted, you'll run into issues (at least I did).
    • If you use ES File Explorer, you have to change the settings before you can easily navigate to the locations needed. To do this in ES File Explorer, do the following:

    • Open ES File Explorer
    • Press the Menu soft-key on your phone.
    • Press "Settings"
    • Under "Directory Settings", change the Home Directory from "/sdcard/" to "/"
    • Under "Root settings", check the "Root Explorer" box and accept the dialogs that follow.
    • Under "Root settings", check the "Mount File System" box and accept the dialogs that follow.
    • Done.

This will allow you to navigate where ever you need to on your filesystem through ES File Navigator without restriction, so PLEASE BE CAREFUL!

    Guide:

    • Download the modified power-up and power-down files listed in the requirements section.
    • Copy the downloaded modified files to your SD card, I did this by connecting my phone to my computer via USB cable, but use whatever method works for you.
    • Using your root file explorer, navigate to: /hidden/data/Power-up-sound/
    • Rename "VMU_Power_Up.mp3" to "VMU_Power_Up.mp3.bak" (or something else, so long as you change its filename)
    • Navigate through your file explorer to the sdcard folder where you've stored the modified files and copy "VMU_Power_Up.mp3".
    • Navigate back to: /hidden/data/Power-up-sound/ and paste the modified file.
    • Navigate to /system/media/audio/ui and rename the file "VMU_Power_Down_48_24.mp3" to "VMU_Power_Down_48_24.mp3.bak" (or something else, so long as your change its filename)
    • Navigate to the sdcard folder where you've stored the modified file and copy "VMU_Power_Down_48_24.mp3".
    • Navigate back to /system/media/audio/ui and paste the modified file.
    • Done

Shutdown your phone and start it up and observe your silent animations!
this worked for me as I finally had the guts to root my phone. I'm glad to get rid of that annoying shutdown sound.

Now I want to find an interesting Android boot animation to replace the Virgin Mobile Splash screens.

thanks again for the detailed instructions

Thank you. This method doesn't cause problems.
btw /hidden/data/CDA/content/start-up-sound/VMU_Power_Up.mp3 can be safely deleted

simply naming .mp3 to .back and replace them with 1s silence causes problems. cannot power down(reboot on shutdown) and still getting start up sound

FYI installing a custom recovery + ROM like CM7 Gingerbread (or even alpha CM9 ICS), the steps to follow are easier than to get rid of the bootup sounds. It's hard to brick a MT so give it a try, way better experience than stock ROM. Head over to the MT section on androidforums.com.

It works very well on most devices and many carriers...
A must have app along with Call End Tone.

ES File Explorer, Settings->Root Explorer: Test failed. (No root access).

Didn't work on my ginger broke MT.

I'm beginning to hate my VM MT, I must say.

Can you suggest a specific version that's fairly stable, friendly? I was told to use starship,
    here as a CM7 ROM

What CWM recovery version? 5.5 was the "RECOMMENDED VERSION" but can't restore it's own backups! Lame. I'm using 5.0.2.3 I think now, but I saw something about needing ext4?

I read here you must reinstall all your applications and settings. Thus you loose call logs, etc? Can you install the data partition(?) of a backup to get your applications on a different ROM? This is a significant hit if so.

Get any terminal program, launch it, type "su". You are now root. Easiest phone in the world to root.

I think you can replace the startup/shutdown sound files by just booting the phone with volume-down depressed, then hooking it to a computer via the USB cable. A bunch of folders will mount, I don't recall which ones had those sounds in them.
