Looking to buy a used Nexus S -- What do I look out for?

Hey, all. So, I'm currently in the process of potentially buying a used Nexus S. However, I've heard that this can be dangerous because of the possibility of a bad ESN. How can I avoid this & what other things should I be looking out for when doing this?

Only CDMA service providers are using ESN such as Verizon and Sprint
