    Advice for Moto Defy

    Hi,

I had moved out of the USA and had switched my plan to a prepaid plan so I wouldn't lose my phone #. Now I am back home and want to start up a contract again, and probably upgrade to a Moto Defy.

    My questions are:

it looks like the $50 monthly plan is a better deal than if I were to start a comparable 2-year contract (~$70/month). Am I misreading the T-Mobile site? If the month to month plan is in fact a better deal, wouldn't it make sense to buy a Moto Defy off ebay? And would I need an unlocked phone? I thought a tmobile rep told me that a T-mobile branded defy would only work for annual contract plans.

I also was inquiring about wifi calling at home, and was told that's only available to annual customers w/ android 2.2 phones. The same rep told me there are no additional charges either. Is that true? I thought I had bee n reading that one needs to pay extra for the wifi calling feature.

If I were to buy an unlocked Moto Defy how would I update it (as android updates are released?) I assume it would not receive tmobile updates automatically?

I apologize if these are dumb questions, but I am new to smartphones and android and living in Germany the past year has increased my ignorance on the subject.

    Thanks

Yeah it would work fine. They're lying to you 100% to sell you on a regular plan

On the $50 plan you'd burn through your data very quickly and then be stuck with crappy throttled speeds the rest of the month.

Wifi calling does work on prepaid; it just bills exactly like any other call. If you're already on an unlimited plan, same difference.

There's also the new postpaid Value plan for $59.99 that gives 2GB data before throttling.

thanks for the help. If i get the $59.99 2gb plan, what speed do I get after the 2gb are used up? does it go to 3g speeds or even slower? I couldn't get a straight answer out of the reps i talked to.

After throttling your connection drops to about 60 kbps whether you're on EDGE or 3G. It's like a dialup modem.
