smartphone, how do we calculate amount owed on contract to upgrade etc?

If I bought my Milestone on a 3 year term in April 2010, how do I calculate how much I would have to pay to get out of the contract? How about if I get a different phone on a 3 year?

Telus has a good early device upgrade policy. If you upgraded more recently the cost would be based on the prorated discount they gave you on your last renewal. If you upgraded before then, they didn't have the exact discount everyone was receiving recorded so it's a flat fee depending on what kind of phone you currently have attached to your line. $5/mo for basic phones, $10/mo for most smartphones, $15/mo for iphone. So just calculate the number of months remaining in your contract and multiply that by $10 which should be your early upgrade fee in your case. You can call Telus or visit a dealer for an exact quote on the amount that would be added to your bill if you upgrade early. They keep saying they will fix the website so you can do your upgrades online again but it hasn't happened yet. I believe if you had upgraded more recently then on your bills it would show the remaining "device balance" which is the prorated amount remaining to pay off your previous discounted hardware.

We think everyone should be able to afford a wireless phone. That's why we were the first wireless company in North America to offer pay-by-the-second airtime, and why we don't charge an activation fee. NO scary contract to sign. Immediate national coverage. And a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Yes, it's finally time to get a wireless phone.

what if we want to close our account completely, does the $10 a month calculation still apply? or is that only for those that are signing a new 3 year contract?

The cancellation fee for existing contracts would be part of your original contract so it has not changed to the new policy unless you have renewed it more recently. $20/mo remaining with a minimum of $100. So your fee to cancel is between $380-$400 depending on how far into april you signed. Renewing is half the cost vs cancelling for you.

If you had paid full price for the milestone they may be willing to lower the renewal fee to the $5/mo rate as long as your previous hardware subsidy was on a basic phone and not a smartphone device, but since you mentioned getting it for the 3yr renewal I think the $200 fee to renew just under 2 years early isn't so bad. What was the amount of the discount you got off the milestone last year, if it was more than $350 off then you are still saving money when renewing early (the discount exceeds the $10/mo early renewal fee)

New cancellation fee is the remaining device balance plus $50 but only if you had renewed the contract after that newer policy went into effect. Since those cancellation penalties are written into the contract they do not change for you unless you renew and sign a new contract.
