OK I currently have the Motorola triumph. I have the option to get the Samsung captivate. Is it better or worse then the Motorola triumph? Not comparing networks.
My friend has a captivate and the screen is very sharp and bright and is a much better looking than the screen on the Triumph. The Triumph seems faster at opening menus and apps and scored higher on the quadrant benchmark when we compared the two (But there is a "lag fix" that's supposed to dramatically improves performance for the Captivate).. Also the touch buttons on the captivate are very hard to see when they are not lit up since they don't have that white look seen on the Triumph. You should also make sure the captivate has at least Android 2.2 because it shipped with 2.1 when it first came out..
Edit - The Captivate also feels much lighter in the hand than the Triumph. The Captivate also does not have camera flash, LED indicator light, or a HDMI out..
I had the verizon fascinate before switching to the MT. +1 on the super amoled screen. The MT seems faster out of the box. You wil definitely want to root and debloat and lagfix a galaxy s phone. At least the captivate doesnt have bing integrated like the fascinate. That said, the captivate isnt a step down.

I would imagine the screen would be a bit better. But, I'm not sure why you're comparing phones from different provider's. There are far better phones than the triumph on different providers/plans. Much better phones than the captivate. Personally, I wouldn't want a captivate BECAUSE of the provider/plan that comes with it.
I havent tried playing any high end games on the triumph yet. Have you tried? Grab dungeon defenders or try the psx emulator. The galaxy s plays dungeon defenders well until there are a ton of onscreen characters. Emulation was also good.

Maybe someones offering him a Captivate for a cheap price. If the Captivate is unlocked he could use it on T-mobiles unlimited prepaid plan for $50 a month.. If it's not unlocked I would stick with the Triumph..
I have a Samsung Vibrant (same as a Captivate, but on T-Mobile.)
Unknown to most the Vibrant DOES have the AT&T 3g bands in hardware - they're just shut off. And it is neither hard to turn them on nor unlock the phone without paying someone. Yes, the Captivate/Vibrant is a TRUE worldband GSM 3g phone. The only one I've seen.
As a comparison, however, I prefer the Triumph. The screen is larger and the battery life at least as good. The Vibrant/Captivate wins the screen "bling" award with the Amoled, but you pay for that in spades in battery life - it's a MONSTROUS power pig.
If all was equal would I run the Vibrant on Virgin? I don't know. I like the Triumph, especially the notification LED, and the front camera is nice too.

I think the deciding factor is more complicated than "battery life". hehe.
I came back to VM as a customer, after being elsewhere for YEARS because of MONTHLY PRICE and GREAT ANDROID PHONES.
Sure, I could go out and get a better phone on another provider, but pay a lot more per month. And... would the phone be that much better? The Triumph is a great phone, and even the OV and Intercept serve the lower end markets.
