My Samsung Galaxy S Infuse 4G review

Here’s the Samsung Galaxy S Infuse 4G. It’s an Android phone running Gingerbread. It’s got a 4.5” Super AMOLED Plus display, 1.2Ghz processor, 512MB RAM, 16GB of storage (13GB usable) and a 21mbps HSPA+ chip.

Visually it shares the same design language with the Galaxy S II though the Infuse 4G has an extra search button and all menu buttons are touch sensitive.

The screen measure 4.5” and has a resolution of 800x480. Since you can get 800x480 displays as small as 3.3” you’re probably wondering how sharp the Infuse’s display is. I compared the Infuse’s 4.5” with the Galaxy S II’s 4.3” display and to be honest there isn’t that much of a difference. Some text is kind of ragged looking but I had to look for it to notice it. That said it’s not as sharp as the HTC Sensation’s 4.3” 960x540 display. Since it’s a Super AMOLED plus display it has the best viewing angles - great for sharing stuff with friends and the deepest blacks. It’s currently my favorite display.

The Infuse is really easy to use. There’s enough room around the menu buttons at the bottom that I never found myself touching them. The shape of the Infuse is such that I’m actually able to use it with one hand even though it has a large 4.5” display. That said I found it a little difficult to unlock the screen with one hand.

On top is a 3.5mm headphone jack.

There’s a power button on the right and volume buttons on the left along with a micro USB port on the bottom.

On the back is a 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash along with a speaker. In front are 4 menu buttons, the earpiece and a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera.

It’s a very solid phone. Despite being thin and plastic the Infuse has a very strong frame. It doesn’t really creak or shift when you squeeze or twist it.

The back cover is extremely thin plastic with an interesting finish. It doesn’t appear to be integral to the phone’s rigidity.

On the software side you get Gingerbread (Android 2.3). Samsung’s Touchwiz software which sits on top of Android appears to be last year’s version vs the newer version which ships on the Samsung Galaxy S II. Two features new features you won’t get with last year’s Touchwiz is the ability to use folders to organize your main menu and Air Kies which lets you manage your phone from your computer via web browser over WiFi.

The Infuse ships with 3 keyboards: the default Android one, Samsung’s and SWYPE. The default Android keyboard isn’t bad. While most people will use SWYPE I actually prefer the Samsung one.

Samsung AllShare is DLNA software which allows you to stream content from the Infuse to compatible viewers like a XBOX 360, PS3, WDTV and many newer TV sets. It usually works. It also has the ability to stream content from A DLNA server to the Infuse. I tested this capability with various video files and it rarely works.

The video program can handle formats like high definition mkv’s and divx avi files which makes it quite versatile. It doesn’t playback AVCHD mts and m2ts files from my high definition camcorder.

Other extra Samsung stuff you get are some widgets including some social media aggregators,
mini Diary and a Samsung App program. You also get a version of Quickoffice that can view as well as edit and create new files. It includes support for cloud based services like Box.net, Google Docs, Dropbox, huddle, SugarSync and mobileme.

As far as camera goes you get a 8MP camera on the back and 1.3MP in front.

The 8MP camera takes good pictures and it takes decent 720P video. When it comes to the front facing camera the included software doesn’t record video, it only takes pictures.

I transferred a 1.1GB video to the Infuse using robocopy on my PC. I observed write speeds of around 8.8MB/s which is about average. I moved the same file back to my PC and got speeds of around 16MB/s which is good.

You get a bigger than average 1750mAh battery which sort of cancels out the bigger than average display. Subsequently battery life is nothing to brag about. Like most modern smartphones the Infuse probably won’t make it through the day.

RF Performance is average. It’s virtually to the Galaxy S Vibrant in this regard.

Incoming sound quality is fine. Outgoing sound quality isn’t very good.

Overall I enjoyed using the Galaxy S Infuse 4G. While it lacks a dual core processor I didn’t find it to be slow. The display is top notch. While it doesn’t bring any more resolution to the table the extra size does bring some additional utility. The camera works well and it’s a solid phone. My only real complaint is that Samsung decided to put an older version of their TouchWiz software on the Infuse which lacks the ability to manage the phone from a browser over WiFi plus the ability to organize your main menu using folders.

Wow, as a fellow North American

I would like to present my child with new technology! Although, I live in the United States, I feel that your site has given me insight on technology that I did'nt know excisted. I like that you compare and give examples of your expanations. You even bring the human side to your company by siting "Boger as a typo" then Roger, as the company. I hope to have two children at University this fall. So, as a parent, I'm putting myself out there.
