Angry LG Banter locked itself - desperate for help

So a few weeks ago I was at work and pulled my phone out of my pocket only to notice it asked me to enter an unlock code, which is strange considering I've never turned on that feature - the only thing I can think of is that somehow, while it was in my pocket, I navigated to the lock code option and somehow input a random string of numbers - I've tried the last for digits of my phone number, 1234, 0000, 9999, etc - none of them worked.

I took it to two separate cellular stores and was told that they could unlock it, but they'd have to erase all the data on the phone in the process.. the problem is, I don't want to lose all the data on my phone and I know it's possible to simply view the lock code through a program like Bitpim or an LG app used by retailers themselves that I have forgotten the name of. I suspect that is only the policy in case the phone in question is stolen.

But my phone just locked itself, and it's incredibly frustrating - I don't want to lose all the data on my phone because of an unfortunate occurence beyond my control.

I'm pretty handy when it comes to computers (I built the computer I'm using to post this message) but am completely in the dark when it comes to cell phones - I don't know the terminology or basics and am at the end of my rope - I just want to gain access to my phone again and need help.. that's why I've come here. I've actually been putting it off for weeks now because I've been so frustrated, but now my text inbox is full the damn things keeps vibrating every 10 freakin' minutes to remind me.

So, how can I go about finding the lock code for this thing?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

If you haven't yet, try OTA reprogramming the phone. Our carrier (Telus) uses *22803 SEND to program the phone over the air. The lock code will then be the last 4 digits of your phone number. Just did this with one of the kids' LG Banter that locked on him, and it worked like a charm... Best of luck!
