Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 To Exceed 20% Market Share By 2015

Researchers Gartner and IDC have predicted that Windows Phone 7 could have a market share of approximately 20% by 2015. This will put it ahead of Apple's iOS but still significantly behind Google's Android which could be sitting pretty at 49% by then.

    However...

Forecasts by researchers Gartner and IDC, which expects a market share of about 20 percent in 2015, are conservative, said Achim Berg, head of Windows Phone marketing, in Berlin today.
Microsoft believes that due to multiple hardware manufacturers and increased marketing efforts and with upcoming release of WP7 devices in Europe, it could capture more than 20% of the market.

    Thoughts?

I could definitely see it happening. iPhone growth is already slowing down, Android growth can't keep up this pace forever (although I expect it'll be maintaining its lead thanks to areas like Africa). Given there's only 3 players at this point, 20%+ isn't a stretch at all.
The word 'Pentaband' means '5 Bands', from the Greek word 'pente' meaning '5'. For a phone to be pentaband it has to support 5 bands. If the phone has AWS support, it doesn't automatically mean that it is pentaband. The reason Wind and Mobilicity users like pentaband phones is because the reverse is true. We're not the only ones who like pentaband phones though, so please stop referring to phones that work on Wind and Mobilicity as pentaband. It causes unnecessary cofusion.

Never gonna happen. They're gonna be at 5% if they're lucky. They might even abandon their ridiculous windows phone OS in a year or two.

It's a Google and Apple world when it comes to mobile. Honestly, NOBODY in their right mind gives a crap about Microsoft's mobile OS. Not only do people not care about it... they AVOID it. This is why they currently have such a small market share. It's going to stay that way... and only get worse.

Microsoft = zero interest among consumers.

    P.S.

Amazon is in this for the long haul. Amazon Android is going to be a major force for keeping Android at the top.

I think once Nokia starts pushing out WP7 devices, the OS is gonna gain some good traction.

You just don't have a clue do you? People were saying it's an Apple world when Android launched. Now they're ahead of Apple. It's a fact that licensing an OS to multiple hardware manufacturers gets you more marketshare than having a vertically integrated model. Apple might be raking in some sweet profit, but that doesn't mean they'll have the same share of the market in a few years.

Microsoft = zero interest among consumers.
You've obviously never heard of the Xbox.

Reading comprehension low much? The OP clearly mentions Android still being at #1 in 2015.

You might see an initial boost in sales, but how many consumers will actually be an unfortunate and unknowing victim of owning a WP7 device rather than willingly purchasing one? Meaning; they liked the phone.... and woops it has WP7 on it.

People actually seek out and buy Android phones BECAUSE android is on it. The same goes for iOS. Nobody (who is sane) is going to seek out a phone because it has WP7. In fact, they'll avoid it! I said the same thing about webOS... and predicted THAT disaster.

RIM is a disaster waiting to happen.
WP7 is going to be a failure.

Android and Apple will be the choice of consumers.

The Amazon Android tablet has huge potential to position itself as the answer to the iPad and iTunes. While it's going to be closely tied to proprietary Amazon apps.... it's still going to be a boost to the Android name. Google wins no matter what.

Just a couple of my own predictions. Only time will tell.

There are plenty of people who are going to buy a Windows Phone because it is a Windows Phone. Even people who didn't go out of their way to get it are happy with it. You just might be the most clueless poster on HoFo.

Clueless? There's no need to get personal. We obviously disagree, and time will tell if I'm right or wrong. I'll gladly come back here and admit my "cluelessness" if Microsoft has a 20% share in 2015.

You're already wrong right now, for the reasons in the post you just quoted.

I bought the HTC Trophy because it had WP7 on it. If that makes me insane, so be it. The app-a-mole UI is getting long in the tooth and WP7 is a breath of fresh air for me. I think people will want a good midde-of-the-road alternative to iOS's walled garden and Android's chaos. WebOS bit the dust because Palm made some very stupid marketing, sales, and hardware design decisions; not because it wasn't a good OS.

You guys are boarding the Titanic. Also, I have some swamp land I'm selling...

Everyone has their own taste. Obviously you're in the severe minority right now. The question is weather market share for WP OS will be at 20% in 2015. My prediction is 5%, or not even a player any longer.

Tell me. Why exactly would I want a WP7 phone? I absolutely cannot think of a single reason that's appealing to me... to choose it over Apple or Android. If I didn't choose Android... I'd go with Apple.

The Trophy is a really solid device. I enjoyed using it when I reviewed it. As for WP7, I couldn't stick with it, not because it wasn't good, it just wasn't what I needed it to be. With the release of Mango shortly, there should be some major improvements with the OS, some much needed love if you will.

I could see it gaining some ground if Microsoft puts a little work into it, like advertising more. Once Nokia is on board though, I do see it jumping, if not for just the name Nokia.

People lining up at Apple stores to buy an iPhone were in the severe minority back in 2007. Look where it is now. As you said, everyone has their own taste. I'll take WP7 over the Apple control-freak mentality and Android craziness any day.

I am with frail on this one. I have tried them all, and would definitely go back to WP7 over the iPhone and Android, especially when Mango comes.

That's true, but the iPhone offered a LOT of advances in phone technology that was very apparent and appealing to consumers.

As I said, why would I want a WP7 phone? Android and iOS are satisfying the great majority of phone users. In todays market, where most phone hardware is very similar, I see nothing to set WP7 apart from the crowd.

iPhone took smart phones into a new direction and era. Android put that new mobile vison into the hands of the masses without the proprietary hardware restrictions. It empowered everyone!

What's WP7 going to do? oh goodie, it connects up to a video game system.

I can honestly say that the very word "Microsoft" does more harm than good. Like the word "IBM" or "Xerox".... "Microsoft" represents boredom and in a sense, THE PAST. It's a DEAD brand.

There are HUGE changes coming in regards to personal computing. Microsoft operating systems are not a part of that revolution.
