The phone will almost certainly come with 5.5.893 installed because they won't have gone through stock to update the firmware as it's far too expensive and unnecessary. It will probably download the update OTA very shortly after activation and you can accept it and run it and then root with djrbliss' Motofail exploit which is very simple.
We also have the full xml.zip of the stock signed fastboot images for .902 as well, so it's entirely safe now to experiment with any of the quickly proliferating ROMs available.
You have come to this phone at a really good time and at a very nice price and should have a good time with it.
Those of us who have had the device from the beginning cannot say the same, for the most part, as we have lived through a very difficult a frustrating path strewn with horrible firmware and radio bugs that have been virtually eliminated for most users by this update.
Enjoy!

I'm playing around with launchers, using LP for a good while; launcher 7 was funny if you like that. But I can't figure out how to select stock short of uninstall which is undesirable.
That sounds as if I should not try it.
FWIW I checked for an OTA today and got prompted to download and install the. 905 update. I did it and everything's been peachy. I don't know why when I flashed the update manually I had problems.

i got the OTA and downloaded it. I had to reroot and reinstall Safestrap. then Eclipse 3.0 which is what I am on now.
Curiosity got the best of me and U installed it. Only concern came when boot took 3 times as long as normal.
First boot after an update is always much longer because the /cache partition is wiped and it rebuilds the cache at first boot.
The update file is downloaded to /cache so it is deleted by the wipe as well as anything that might conflict between versions.
This was primarily a baseband update, with some minor system changes.
