Is there a bbm only plan?

    Hi everyone,

I have a plan with rogers that i'm using with my samsung galaxy s2. I'm planning on buying a used blackberry since I need bbm for a while. I heard that there is a $15 plan where you can get just bbm, but when I called in they said they dont have that and its an add on that I'd have to add to a voice plan.

Is there any way around this? Is there any way to get bbm without a voice plan or contract (I only need it for a couple months)?

If I cant do this with rogers, anyone know of any other company? How about prepaid? Or would I be able to sign up for that add your kids for $17 thing? lol

Since I only need bbm im hoping to only spend around $15 a month...
    Thanks

You should be able to do it with the BB social or BB e-mail plan (both plans contain BBM). I heard that the minimum price for a plan has to be $15 which both these qualify.

For me, I have a Blackberry BIS only data plan (no voice) with 500MB of data which can access BIS and BBM as well as e-mail and the social networking applications. The "voice component" is called "Network Access Plan". Perhaps you can call Rogers and mention that you want the "Network Access Plan" with one of the Blackberry plans. The cost of the "Network Access Plan" is $0.00 (+ GRRF) so it is like having no voice plan.
Fido (monthly plan - personal/data):Novatel Wireless MC950D or Nokia CS-18

Rogers (pay as you go - Canadian prepaid): "Fido" LG Nexus-4

Rogers (monthly BIS data plan): Blackberry Q10

Red Pocket Mobile (US prepaid): Sony-Ericsson c510 or Sony-Ericsson w300i

T-Mobile (US prepaid): unlocked Fido iPhone 3GS 32GB or "Fido" Samsung Nexus-S

Ok, well I called again and they wont add that without switching my exsiting plan to a family plan amd making it a 3 year contract. Guess I'll have to go with koodo for $25 a month instead.

I'm not sure why Rogers won't give it to you. The only thing that I can think of is that the monthly price might be too low even though I've heard otherwise.

Another thing that I noticed is that when I call regarding my plan, a lot of CSRs are surprised that I have a Blackberry BIS only data plan. They assume that I have a data stick plan until they check my plan details and see that my device is a Blackberry.

I'm not sure what Koodo offers for $25/month but I'm paying roughly that much for no contract, BIS only data plan on Rogers. I use my Blackberry as a data only device where I use BBM, instant chatting, e-mailing, and any data-required program such as Facebook that I install on my Blackberry.

The $25/month plan with koodo is simply their cheapest voice plan for $15 and blackberry data connect for $10. One thing I'm concerned about.. since ill only be able to access email and bbm how will I make sure the blackberry doesn't use data for something running in the background? Not sure if blackberries do it too but my android is constantly doing something requiring data lol I'd feel safer with a BIS data plan like yours.

I don't understand why its such a big deal to add another line with just that. I feel like its possible but the csrs are just trying to upsell or something. Do you think I should go into a rogers instead of calling?

Thanks double1, ill give fido a call and see if I can that too

Blackberry programs that use the standard APN (not BIS) will download occasionally though out the day similar to other smartphones like AndroidOS phones and iPhones. The Blackberry programs that use BIS won't download without the appropriate plan so you don't have anything to worry about on that end... only the programs that use the standard APN. It will depend on how the carrier handles downloads without a data plan. For Rogers/Fido, you get a warning asking you to buy a data pass. I'm not sure what happens on Koodo.

If you have no plans on using the voice on your Blackberry, my suggestion to you is to try to get what I have which is a BIS only data account. My plan gives me 500MB of data and this gives me access to GoogleMaps, e-mail, the social networking programs like Facebook, BBM, etc. 500MB is also quite a lot of data for a Blackberry.

Don't bother calling in. Go to a store, just have to find a rep who knows how to do it

    That's a good suggestion.

That's what I actually did when I got my Blackberry BIS only data plan. As I mentioned, when I call Rogers for something related to my account, almost all the CSRs whom I've spoken with didn't know anything about my plan and assumed that I was using a data stick until they noticed my device as well as the type of data plan on my account.

So after about 7 calls and two visits to rogers, they just wouldnt do it. Gave fido a call and they had no problem giving me the $10 plan.

Now i'm trying to decide between the curve 9360 and the bold 9780... i know the 9780 is old now, but I really like the look and keyboard of it. I can get it brand new for $300.

The curve is newer, and koodo has it for $300 + a $50 visa gift card and I have a $25 referral, so in the end its really $225.

    I'm so torn lol
