I actually just signed up for this, porting from TMO to SM. Though I probably won't do the activation on SM until the end of my just started billing cycle on TMO between having to ship it to my home back home and then to my home off-campus some ways away.

The reason why I'm switching is I just can't afford TMO for 75 a month. Every little bit of money helps and I just don't want to lose my G2 in the process.

I am still doing that Speedtest.net test every hour and hope that Simple Mobile will fix that slow download "cap" speed problem. But miracle did not happen.

Then I one more time went onto their new web site and carefully look at their advertisement on their new $40.00 plan, and found this sentence "Unlimited Internet at UP TO 3G speeds",

    http://www.mysimplemobile.com/plans-40-unlimited.aspx

the key word here is "UP TO", they did not phrase the sentence as "Unlimited Internet at 3G speed", "UP TO" means from 0kbps to what ever 3G speed is. So even they just provide one with 2G speed, they are OK.

How you like English? First "Unlimited" and now "Up to".

Most likely they will keep this download "cap" speed unchange. Hopefully more user complaints will change their mine later.

    Justs my 2 cents.

Up to eh? I don't recall seeing those weasel words before...

I'd still like to see more tests. But 120k isn't 3g by most definitions. If it is mostly EDGE /Gprs speeds then Simple is going to replace their data cap controversy with a data speed controversy.

It's never Simple with Simple is it it seems...

    Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (Android; Opera Mini/6.1.25577/25.872; U; en) Presto/2.5.25 Version/10.54)

if it will be only slow data at $40 plan - in my opinion better is take $50 tmobile prapaid plan. first 100 mb is fast (up to 4G). and after 100mb is 2G - compare speed to $40 SM plan. with tmobile is better service and no cap...

It seems that Simple Mobile is trying to do "clever" marketing or just doesn't understand the difference between 2G and 3G/4G.

Nonetheless, I wonder if the Android 'modification' to not get throttled would work to bring the full 3G/4G speeds.
    What modification would that be?

The services.jar hack, look on XDA if your interested. It doeant work, the throttling isn't client side, its server/network side.

Nothing new here H2o pulled the same crap with there so called unlimited 3g data, Go Phone crappy data speeds. So either you pay the $60 for 4G like speeds or go to T Mobile for $70.

It is sad to know that this is a common practice of the phone companies.

Actually, I think a $40.00 unlimited call + text + 3G data (speed: 300kbps to 500kbps and data cap at 1GB or 1.5GB) plan will make a lot of people happy and switch their phone service.

    Why this is not happening!

First Netflix and now Simple Mobile, all claimed that their changes are for the public good.

    Sad just sad.

Can some do a 3G speed test (who's on the $40 plan)

Hey all... just wondering if someone can do a speed test now and see if the speed has increased any.

    Thanks

On a possibly related note, Virgin Mobile is probably feeling the heat from plans like this. They've decided not to throttle unlimited 3g data down to a 256 k max after 2.5 gigs till next year. Frankly, this is more generous then what most mvnos offer. Att/Tmobile mvno " 3/4g unlimited" is apparently one gig with a edge throttle. I'm sure the SM users of this plan would be a lot less annoyed if it were up to 256k rather then just 120.

I'm simply going to treat this as an unlimited everything (2)gsm plan. There is a strong indication that Tmobile prepaid will be launching a 2gig 4g with throttle unlimited everything plan for $60 which will knock Simple's position as top dog in that price point/plan slot should it come to bear. Plus there's always the five gig with throttle plan for $70 at Tmo prepaid.

Simple Mobile loves to play tricks with its data it seems. First a capped one gig on its "unlimited" $60 plan and now a speed cap. It'd been better if they'd just marketed this as their old $50 unlimited everything plus 2g data plan with a $10 discount, then you wouldn't be hearing as much criticisms.

Confirmed in Detroit and Ann Arbor... 119kbps caps

I pressed on with my adoption of Simple Mobile after having seen a video showing 1 Mbps download speeds in Detroit on YouTube. Silly that I had never thought that the video may have been showing off the $60/mo plan.

Now here I am with my Nexus One stomping along at 119kbps.

Luckily, I make a habit of using music services that stream at 24-40kbps while on the road. Viva Audiogalaxy and Yourmuze.fm!

Does anyone know if Straight Talk's data speeds are any better?

See sig for Straight Talk (AT&T MVNO).

The $60 plan can go above 1mbps depending in the area. T-Mobile is coming out with a new $60 plan for unlimited + 2GB data, that is uncapped speeds.
