Does someone know how long voicemail messages are retained by Tracfone voicemail? Does it matter whether you put the message in the "archives"? The Tracfone site doesn't seem to have much info. about their voicemail system.

That's because it's not Tracfone's voicemail system. With Tracfones your voicemail could be on the Verizon (CDMA), AT&T (GSM), or T-Mobile (GSM) voicemail system. Maybe someone else can chime in if I'm wrong but when I archive them on AT&T they seem to stay in there until I delete them, otherwise they disappear after about 15-days even ones I never got to hear. There might be limits on how many you can archive but I've never archived enough to find out.
If it prompts you to "personalize your support", you will have to go along with that otherwise it won't allow you to view the page; select Wireless and click Continue. It doesn't explain all of the options, but it's somewhat more info. than what Tracfone provides, which is basically zero.
I did a little testing and found you could leave up to 20 messages, maximum duration 2 minutes each, which is consistent with AT&T's Basic Voicemail service. When the messages are saved into the archive, you still cannot leave any more messages, so there is a total limit of 20. The announcement when the mailbox is full reads "The mailbox belonging to [number] is full and cannot accept new messages at this time. Please try again later. Goodbye." Messages are saved in the archive for 14 days.
It appears they are now turning password protection on by default on newly activated voicemails, so when you dial 1 for your voicemail you have to enter the PIN number (password); this wasn't the case before. This is to prevent people from accessing your voicemail by spoofing your cell phone number. The PIN number can be 4 to 15 digits long, although the setup announcement doesn't indicate that.
