The vzw 'flagship' og "Droid Does!" had a keyboard only 2 years ago. It is not unfair to expect a leading edge top line full landscape keyboard handset from the same provider now. If vzw won't do it, another Co will. The business user will demand it.
The D4 is swiftly sliding back from the leading edge. Other posters here can descry better on the near side of the horizon.

It's official!
DROID 4 is deceivingly slim at half an inch thin – packing not only a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM, but also a five-row QWERTY keyboard with a PC-like layout and edge-lit keys for fast, precise typing, even in the dark.
Just need the date... so I can obsess about it.
It's not any fatter than my D1. Optional SD card? Doesn't come with one (SD card)?

Am I the only one that doesn't get why Motorola is going from 7 home screens to only 5 on their newer smartphones?
Agreed. The D4 only gives an extra 0.2GHz in CPU and an extra 512MB RAM (plus LTE, but I spend most of my time with a wifi connection), but is bulkier, has worse battery life, loses GSM, and other issues. I can instead buy a used D3 for ~$230 or so, root the phone and install a custom ROM (which will take who know how long with the D4), and probably have ICS way before the D4 does. And the D3 car/desk dock are much cheaper than what the D4's will go for initially.
Then, I can wait to see what will happen with Motorola and with the new LTE chips. Unless HTC's fireball is actually a good global keyboard phone, but we'll have to wait for that.
I wish it was fatter...
...and had a real hard square battery with a metal case that you can take out and replace with a spare instead of that squishy flat breakable battery in a plastic bag.
Then - maybe - I could still feel hopeful...
