I would have to mention my needs are clearly different. IMHO, it would be horrible mistake if they increased the screen size to 4.5" or more. The problem is that my D3 just barely fits into my pocket as it is. Grow it ANY larger, and it stops being a cell phone and becomes a tablet. In other words, when it can't fit into my pocket, it becomes totally useless to me as a cell phone.

Gentlemen, you are comparing apples to oranges.

The widest phone going is the RAZR @2.71" with a 4.3" screen. The GNex and it's 4.7" display is a tad narrower @2.67". Walt, the D4 won't work for you because @2.65" it is over an eighth of an inch wider than your 2.52" D3 -- even though both Droid sliders have the same 4" display. Note that the 4" display D4 and the 4.7" display GNex are essentially the same 4-2/3" wide. In fact, the D3 @ 2.52"W x 4.85"L could accommodate a 16:9 aspect 5" diagonal display @ approximately 2.375" x 4.375" [or 2-3/8" x 4-3/8"] per Pythagoras.

What moto needs is really two diff sizes for the sliders. One of them should be the same size range as OG DROID to the D4, while the other probably around 4.5 or so. This probably would satisfy the vast majority of people. Although we know that moto is not going to do this, as they (along with several other oems) have been on the badwagon of anti-qwerty movement. Only after the current fad with slate phoen passes (if it ever does), would we see some better choices for slider phones.

For now, something like a 4 - 4.3 inch D5 is the best that we can hope for.

Yep. I am not saying the PHONE has to be bigger. Just the SCREEN. Motorola is going all out on thinness, but bezel size keeps going up so you get a bigger thinner phone with no extra screen. I would rather get a bigger screen with no extra phone area and similar or slightly bigger thickness. Pretty sure we could have a near 5" 16:9 screen in something the D4's size. Particularly if it's allowed to go up in thickness a good bit and they went to onscreen buttons like the GNex, but didn't put as much lower/upper bezel on it. The bezel in those areas on the GNex is nice for landscape holding, but with a slide out keyboard usually slid out in landscape I would not miss them as I would hold the keyboard area where inadvertent inputs could be avoided. If the D3/D4 are not too big AREA wise and you could live with a bit extra thickness I am pretty sure you could have a near 5" device if Motorola got creative on packaging and bezel area reduction. Basically grow the screen, not the phone.

BTW, the iPhone is about 16:9 at 5" if it were ALL screen. Add a tiny bit of bezel to that and that is what I am after.

I totally agree with the phones getting to wide. I finally made it to the store today to hold a Maxx. I think that little extra thickness makes it a lot more comfortable for me to hold. I hate to say this but I actually did not do too bad typing on it or using swype. I will still wait for the 4 to come out, but I guess this could be an option that may work well too if I go that route.

Either the RAZR (2.71"x 5.15" ) or the GNex (2.67" x 5.33" ) is big enough to fit a full 16:9 aspect 5-1/4" diagonal display and still have the 4 physical buttons at the bottom:

    Display size= 2.6" x 4.6"
    16/9=1.78 | 4.6/2.6=1.77
    (2.6x2.6) + (4.6x4.6) = 27.9
    sqrt(27.9) = 5.28 diag. > 5-1/4"

See, I did the math. ")

I would settle happily for an even 5 inches.

Could you please show us your working prototype for this design?

I think your "math" might be missing some real world design restrictions, like a bezel size (thickness) backed by facts, and not by assumptions and good wishes.

Just curious, what is meant by "and sign up for ... accompanying voice and text message plans." Is there an extra cost text plan one has to sign up for too, in order to get the double data???

I registered for this... some are not comfortable giving BB their cell numbers, but for $50 I will give it a shot

$20 more than what VZW will give me for loyalty.

Not precise, no, but Pythagoras is 8th grade math. You can follow it. Remember, "The square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides."

No wishful thinking -- it works. There's even some slack for small bezels.

    With my good wishes.
