Any Tmobile HSPA + 14.4 and greater phone would be considered in the "4G" class. Att clearly defines that as their own line on what "4G" is and are trying to get Apple to allow them to label the gsm version fo the new iphone 4s as "4g" as a competitive advantage against its cdma rivals Verizon and Sprint who are stuck with evdo A 3G (max theoretical download speed is only 3.1 megabits.

The disadvantage these days is 1) a 4G phone will go through data much faster then a 3G one.
    2) There is no such thing as true, unqualified unlimited data anymore. There are increasingly caps, throttles and overages.

    That's life.

According to a video I just watched the Samsung Dart T499 which is one of the phones sold for this 30 dollar plan has built in VOIP calling. You can set the phone to make all calls over data by default. The phone is 120.00 plus tax and the service is 30.00 so you could walk in get a new phone and service and walk out for about 170.00.
The Dart is a very entry level Android. Do not expect anything great out of it. But for a phone that is just over a bill and will can be set on board to make data only calls. It would be worth a try. If it comes to the TMob stores here in St Louis I will be giving it a try.

And I just got done looking at wifi calling in the dart user manual and it says that using wifi calling does count against your min.
So another free voip service will be needed.

So Wal-Mart should have this out in less than 24 hours now? Will be interesting to see. May pick one up just for the data. Would make for a nice mobile netflix device.

Uh oh. That contradicts what the lady at my Walmart told me. I specifically asked her if I could use a third party phone, and she said yes, as long as it's a Tmobile phone. The Tmobile rep said the same thing in chat. And yes, I clearly specified the NEW plan coming out tomorrow.

Tmobile is going to get slammed on this plan. At least it's capped and throttled up front. Reduces all the data hog snivelling and whining that comes from other unlabelled "unlimited" plans like H20/Simple. lol.

OK, so does this mean that if I have wifi available, that I can make calls without eating into that 100 minute limit?

Yes, but you need something like Skype or Line2. T-Mobile's built in to their Androids wifi-calling feature still uses your minutes.

does anyone know for sure if the simultaneous T-mo branded $60 monthly 4G plan that I hope is coming to their website tomorrow will let me use my brand new G2?

if I have an prepaid activation card (the ones for $3.34 worth or 10 minutes of prepaid), can I use that code online at T-mo website to activate this new G2?

and does it have to be used with the sim card that the activation card came with, or can I use the T-mo sim card that came with my G2?

the G2 was not purchased as a "prepaid" phone, it is new and unlocked and rooted and owned outright.

Nobody knows for sure 100% until it's tried. However, considering that Tmobile has the most liberal policy of all of the Big 4 in prepaid on byod (even smartphones are allowed, unlike say Att's feature phone $50 everything plan which requires additional data pack charges if it is an smartphone). One could possibly activate a cheapo blisterpack Tmobile prepaid device and switch sims if worse comes to worst. I don't think that will happen. Existing Tmobile prepaid customers should be able to make the switch also.

Can't reassure you 100 % but I'd say that Tmo won't be trying to lock down this plan so much. They want to sell volume and at this price, they will.

thanks for the quick reply, but still not clear on if I bought a T-mo prepaid activation kit on ebay (activation code & sim), and the seller sent me the activation code via email off the card while I wait for the prepaid activation kit (activation code & sim) to arrive, could I use my existing brand new sim that came with my phone (that sim is brand new and unused) with that code the seller sent, and sign up for this online, or are the prepaid sims different and/or are they somehow tied to the activation code?

I have done this a couple of times. Used and activation code purchased on eBay with a new SIM that I already had. You should have no issues doing this. I agree with fonefonz that they are VERY unlikely to lock this plan down. I have three prepaid lines and three post paid lines. I have swapped many T-Mobile branded Android phones as well as unlocked AT&T Android phones (currently using an Inspire 4G on the $50 prepaid plan) without any issues whatsoever. I even use one of the prepaid SIM's in my Galaxy Tab! I will report tomorrow after switching my PAYG line to this new plan. I'll swap between a few T-Mobile phones and a few unlocked AT&T phones and will post the results in this forum.

Another thing that might be good is that when they give you so many gigs they dont care how you use them. I can freely tether with the optimus t. Via wifi hotspot. That in itself is worth the 30 bucks. Tmo lost a lot of post contract customers when att announced the attempted take over so they are trying to make up with prepaid. With prepaid they dont mail billsand at 50 cents or more a month per customer they save vs post paid. Plus there are no deliquent accounts. There are some advantages to prepaid. Prepaid folks know if they want to use the phone it jas to be paid on time. Whereas postpaid might slide a few months a big bill might add up that may never get paid plus etf. Then to a bill collector whrre they might get 10 percent of total amount due.

They actually charge post paid customers to receive a paper bill. :-)

I was told you had to buy the phone at WM to get this plan, it comes packaged specifically with one of the five phones I saw on his employee flyer. After you activate he said put the sim in a phone of your choosing. I asked if the sim would be locked to the activated phone like the go phones and he said "no".
