That's where I'm confused, there are other reports saying this, yet ones saying it is hspa+ etc. WTF lol... either it is or isn't.

I hope your right, as that would be idiotic for them to not enable after all this time...

A bigger screen was one of the things I really wanted, but the most important thing I DID want is a US GSM unlocked version. I contacted Apple last night and the 4s will not be sold unlocked for US AT&T buyers. Not even an option, like Canadians have, of buying it unlocked.

Having a "world phone" means nothing to the consumer if they are tied to a carriers roaming charges. Where is the FCC in this matter, when I thought that a phone could only be carrier locked if it was exclusive? Now that the phone can technically be used by almost all carriers worldwide, wouldn't that take the exclusivity clause off?

Now, on Apple's part in this matter, they are the only manufacturer that will not allow, for a price, a consumer to purchase an unlock code. This has all to due with agreements ($) between Apple and US carriers and does nothing to benefit us, the consumers.

My rant about unlocking is over! My disappointment, like others have said before me, is that I waited longer to find out about this than the normal 12 month Apple refresh period. If this phone had come out in June I probably would not have been as underwhelmed by the phone.

What to do with my upgrade now?

It's a pretty badass phone. Even though it's been available overseas for six months or so, the specs are still better than the iPhone 4S.

Buy a point and shoot camera. If all you were waiting for was a good camera on a cell phone then yea, your expectations were too low. I don't care what kinda of lenses Apple puts into a camera it will never be a TRUE point and shoot camera.

Apple says their innovative and always pushing the envelope. Took them over a year to put more memory, dual core CPU and a 8mp camera into form factor thats been out for over 14 months. Not every innovative to me considering there were phones out 14 months ago with a 8MP camera and recoding 1080p.

I guess we have to accept that apple is playing catchup now, atleast it seems that way to me. I like iOS, 100% more stable than Android but when it comes to the guts and style of a phone HTC, Samsung, and Motorola have them beat.

I may wait for the HTC Holiday, (or whatever they may call it), to see what that is like.

Not a bad idea either. I've heard that the specs for that phone are supposed to be pretty nice too. Hopefully AT&T announces the phone soon so that we can have an approximate release date.

Though the iPhone 4S looks the same as the iPhone 4, Phil Schiller, Apple's marketing chief, said: "Don't be deceived because inside it is all new."
But I was really hoping for a 4" screen at the least

I upgraded to iOS5 and i'm not as impressed as I thought I would be. For me the Twitter integration is pointless. Facebook would've made more sense, don't see much of an improvement in Safari, News Stand is point less for me sense I don't read on my phone and you can't even put the icon in a folder to hide it???? iMessage, can't find it on my phone, but still won't use it that much since I only know 2 other people with iPhone's. The Notification Center while much improved is still lacking. I wish we had the options to customize it a little more than what they do give us.

One thing that bothers me about it is when you get a notification no matter if your using your phone or its locked, if its locked and you unlock it, no matter if you check the notification or not, all notifications will be removed from the lock screen. So say I have 2 e-mail, a facebook notification and a txt message, if I check the txt and then lock my phone, when I turn it back on again all the notifications are gone. If I go into the phone they are still in the notification center but there aren't any icons on the status bar to let me know that.

I might be jumping back to Android for a while as well, we'll see.

So that's it, then? A minor tweak to the current model. I'll just keep my rotten old iPhone 4 and use it until it crumbles to dust, like I should do with something that cost that much and was that hard to find. Be it ever so humble.

Also: 500 posts! Yay me! And it only took me 8 years to do it! What a pity my 500th post had to be about something as worthy of
a hearty Meh as the iphone 4s.

I thought iOS 5 wasn't going be available until October 12th? Did I miss something?

If you believe Apple and drink the Kool-Aid its the best phone ever. IMO they dropped the ball big time by not releasing the iPhone 5. I guess they figure they can make a few extra bucks by just improving the current model just a bit. Sucks too because I had my $$ in hand waiting to go buy one.

If all this was that customizable with stock iOS then there would be less need for jailbreaking......
