Red face SH-10C/other Sharp Keitai tips and tricks for Beginners.

Greetings to the the Keitai Community!

I just got my first Keitai phone yesterday (SH-10C from Docomo).

Being new to the world of Keitai, I decided to make this post to gather information on tips and tricks that us (beginners) did not know keitai is capable of. I hope for veteran keitai users to chime in for cool and fun tricks and facts for Japanese cell phones.

I'll start with some questions that beginners like me would probably have no idea of

    1) When I press the Hold/Power button, a screen with menu pops up on my SH-10c. It looks like a shortcut menu with numbers assigned to it (1-9 and *,0,#). I can activate the selection with the touch screen but when I use any of the keypad numbers, it seems the phone thinks I wanted to dial a number instead.

    2) Im under AT&T. When I go to the menu for which you can activate voice mail (menu>TEL Function>voicemail service), it says "This function is unavailable with specified UIM". I always thought voicemail is a given on any phone or service provider.

    3) How can you make your Machi-chara speak? I already activated the Chat (Menu>Setting>Sound/Vibrate/Manner>Machi-chara chat setting>On>Speaker). Does IT speak at all?

    4) Data storage. When transferring data from PC/Mac to micro SD, does it need to have a specified folder on the micro SD? (my micro SD still haven't arrived so I haven't experimented yet)

    5) Downloding and using contents like ringtones or wall papers. Where and how can one get them?

    6) Any quick way or short cut to switching to Self mode or Silent mode?

Thats what I can think of for now. Sorry if some of the questions are kind of dumb.

Thank you in advance and I hope this will be of great help to those starting out in the Keitai world.

    2) Try holding CLR. If a casette icon pops up on the top, the voicemail is activated.

    4) Docomo specifies which and were you should place and name specific files. Download the SH-10C's PDF manual at the Docomo Global website.

    5) You can't download ringtones via mobile internet, but for WiFi, maybe. For link, you can check out the sticky.

    6) Hold # for Manner Mode

This isn't voicemail. The cassette icon stands for "answer phone", which is a built-in answering machine. On the keypad there should be a small cassette symbol somewhere (maybe #7). Use that for switching ON/OFF. It is also available to set from within your profiles. I think it's ON by default in manner/driving mode.

Ringtones... check out the dedicated threads/sticky inside the Sharp subforum. Generally, you could download MLD ringtones and use them (the uploading process is also described in the sticky). There's a paid application that lets you create your own MLDs. DoCoMo have unfortunately limited the size of MLDs to 100 KB which, if you use the higher quality setting is like 10 seconds, or up to 30 seconds if you use lower quality settings (sounds really bad).

There are some Chinese sites that offer custom made MLDs for download, but expect 95% to be Chinese/Japanese songs.

    Enjoy your keitai!

How about for basic call. How do you switch from earpiece to speakers and vice versa when on a call?

I also had this problem with SMS sending. I was able to type and send SMS on my phone but apparently they were not able to receive it nor was able to receive a message from another mobile. Any thoughts?

That would be your Messaging Center. You need to input your carrier's SMS Center in the messaging(?) settings. By default, it's DoCoMo. Try figuring it out while waiting for the others to pitch in on this.

Anyway, congratulations on getting a SH-10C as your first keitai! All I got for my first was a hand-me-down SH906i.

MENU > Mail > Mail Setting > SMS Setting (second screen) > SMS center > User set: type in your carrier's SMS center number. (* Setting path on the SH-01B but shouldn't be much different than on the SH-10C).

Also remember that pressing the END CALL button does not reject an incoming call but puts it on hold. If you want to reject the call, you must use Submenu > Call rejection.

Thanks! Apparently it was my carrier who did not activate my sms so the SMS center number is not active.

Yep, it was the messaging center.

    On to my next question:

    1) What format of Music an Movie does SH-10c support?
    >For movies, I encode my purchased movies using Handbrake.
    >For Music I have AAC from iTunes when I import CDs

I think Music is WMA/MP4, while Videos are like MP4/3GP. Again, check the SH-10C's manual. I think it's somewhere in "Music & Videos" or "Data Management." Same place where you can know where to place your converted music and videos.

For Data Storage with microSD cards, you can use the Easy SD Management Tool for FOMA. It can be found here.

That most likely is because you left the battery out for more than 30 seconds. After that, the internal clock is reset.

Next time try removing the SIM as fast as you can and put the battery back in.
