Virgin does not outright block short codes and many of them work fine. I may be wrong, but it's my understanding that short code providers need to deal with each carrier separately. Some simply don't support VMC.

It's my understanding (from a VM rep) that Virgin Mobile blocks text messages coming from "short codes" like 12345. Does that sound right?
I couldn't get the VM rep to tell me anything more than "we don't support that short code". I wanted to know if they could unblock it for me, and if they block all short codes or just that specific one. So I'm asking this forum if anyone knows why they do this (prevent spam?) and if I can work around it. It's for a text alert system (reservation reminders) for a car-share service, and it sucks I can't register since the texts are blocked.

Hey there. This is Talli and I work here at Virgin Mobile. We don't block short codes and some definitely do work, but some may not. All are different. If you shoot me an email at hello@virginmobile.ca, i'll look into it for you.

Thanks.
I did send an email to hello@virginmobile.ca, and the last correspondence was 2 weeks ago saying that they were working with the short code sender to resolve the issue. So far I still cannot receive the messages, but I have always been able to send them, because I texted the signup keyword and my account there says I'm signed up for mobile alerts. Not that it does me any good.
Oh ok...like I said in my email to you, we're working with ZipCar to get this fixed up...it's a known issue.

I'm having a similar issue, short codes worked fine when I was with Rogers and since switching to Virgin most of them are not coming through. I called into customer care, was on hold for about 10 minutes then was told I wasn't getting them because I was using a non Virgin phone. I asked how come some come through and others were not but was not given a straight answer. I brought my own phone using the BYOP deal so I don't understand the reasoning behind how using an unlocked phone would somehow prevent texts from coming through.
I'm able to get short codes from google (6245) and capital one (227663) but not from visa (468472), amex (26391) and hotmail (89895). I emailed hello@virginmobile.ca and they said they would have a tech look into it; hopefully I don't get the same response.
